((TW // Slight Dissociation, violence))
Alone again. How come he always ended up alone? A bleak and seemingly endless cycle. George saw it with his parents when he was eleven, saw it with Sam when he was eighteen, and saw it with his group now, at twenty-three. But he always had Dog. Instead of panicking, instead of calling out, George simply flopped to the floor and crossed his legs neatly. He removed his quiver from his leg to sit more comfortably and he took the bow from his back, placing it on his lap.
When George was younger, and his father took him on the weeklong hunting trips, he never forgot the things his father taught him. He remembered how his dad taught him to make a fire, and which berries he could eat. He knew the wilderness better than he knew civilization. A small smile brushed his lips as he remembered his old man. He always looked forward to those hunting trips. He hated leaving his mother behind, but the bonding time he spent with his father, he would cherish those forever.
'George.' He remembered hearing his father say. 'If you ever get lost, stay where you are. I'll come find you.'
"You'll find me dad, you always did." George hummed with bliss. He knew very well his father wasn't coming, that he wasn't going to find George. But he had faith his group would. Dog sat in front of George, her jade-green eyes bright and wide with wonder.
Dog wiggled her tail lightly and sat in front of George. George smiled and started making faces at his dog. He knew she didn't comprehend it, but it made him feel goofy. It was one of the only things that made him giddy with a childish delight. Dog wiggled her tail, woofing softly. George giggled and started to scratch behind her ears. Happily, she thumped her right hind leg repeatedly on the ground.
George smiled, he felt at peace. That's how it started, wasn't it? Dog eventually lied down next to George, hunkering down for the wait. George relaxed his tense shoulders. It would only be a matter of time before the fog cleared and he would be able to find his team. To pass the time, he counted the songbirds he heard, matching them to a species. Three blue-jays, a woodpecker, and a finch. He remembered his mother would play the ocarina to the same tunes he heard the birds sing. She always said it was natures song. He liked those songs. He found himself doing the same his mother did. He'd listen to their calls and hum them back.
Not long later, the fog did in fact clear, but only slightly. The mist lifted around him, showing him he was in a very small clearing surrounded by trees. This was very clearly not the place he had lost his team. He didn't move. They weren't even in the wooded part of the valley. His calm demeanor started to drip away, like an ice cube that started to melt.
He looked forward into mist and saw two people appear. He became relief for a second, thinking it was two of his friends. But then where was the third? His feeling of hope was very short lived as it was replaced with fear and confusion. He only grew more concerned when the figures became feminine with body curves.
The fur that lined Dog's spine started to stand up on its own as she two became anxious and weary of the newcomers. "Whose there?" George demanded. Dog huffed out, pressing herself against George's leg protectively.
"Hello...? We're lost!" Responded a woman's voice.
This visibly shocked George. There shouldn't be anyone else in the valley, no one except the group of gloomy men. "O-Over here?" George regretfully called.
Two girls appeared from the mist. They couldn't be older than their early-to-mid twenty. One of the girls, the taller one, had strangely dyed purple hair that fell to her mid-back. She had a flat and rounded face with bright blue eyes. The other and short one shared the same frosty blue eyes, but she had dark brown hair instead.
