"I don't hate being smart but I don't like it either."
"Why don't you like it?"
Brandy sighed.
She was at an all you can eat buffet with Kodaviah at the moment- and everything had kinda seemed like a date but it wasn't.
It was just two friends getting to know one another on a deeper and closer relationship than before.
They had gone there after going to Santarico's pawn shop without knowing that it was a pawn shop... which they were all going to get into some trouble for sometime soon.
"There's so much pressure placed on me and I'm not always OK with it. It drives me insane sometimes. You probably won't understand."
Kodaviah just stared at her, blinking continuously.
"What's that supposed to mean? You saying I'm not smart or something?"
She had tried to utter a word although it didn't work, and Brandy had pretty much thought that Kodaviah was mad at her.
Until he had smiled, telling her that he was only messing with her.
But those that weren't messing with them had just arrived at the all you can eat buffet.
You sure it's them?
Yes it's them! They were at the pawn shop.
The was a dark skinned security guard and there was a light skinned one as well, both in police uniform and sunglasses too.
Kodaviah and Brandy had immersed into conversation for some time, although when Brandy had realised that some security guards were heading their way?
She wasn't very happy about that, at all.
"Uhm... Kodaviah?"
"Yeah?"
She didn't say anything though, she had just kept on looking at the police officers who had seemed to be making their way over there.
And when she had realised that yes, they were coming there?
That was when she had freaked out for good.
Kodaviah had asked her if she was OK, most especially how she hadn't even answered his question to begin with.
Brandy had just told him to make a run for it because some police officers were looking for them. Which Kodaviah didn't really believe at first- that was until he had seen them come his way.
Panicking like crazy, the two of them had then made a run for it out of the all you can eat buffet, which they hadn't even paid for.
The only good thing about this was the fact that they had gotten free food, but that was it really.
They had gone into some alleyway together, with both of them still looking for them. Their backs were both leaned against the wall now, moving around like a thief in the night.
"Why are they looking for us?" Brandy hissed.
"How am I supposed to know?"
It was after Kodaviah had asked her that that they had both simultaneously heard the words pawn shop being said really loudly by one of the police officers.
Brandy was not very happy when she had heard that.
"Your cousin's shop was a pawn shop?!"
"Brandy, I swear I didn't know. You've got to believe me."
Actually, in a way, both of them were responsible for this.
There was a huge sign at the top of the shop literally saying Santarico's Pawn Shop which none of them had paid much attention to.
Plus Kodaviah wasn't that close enough to Santarico to know that he had owned a shop like that in the first place.
If she had believed him then she didn't really show it, mainly because she had given him the silent treatment.
Kodaviah had tried to talk to her although she didn't say anything to him.
"Brandy, man, please don't ignore me."
She didn't listen to him, still keeping silent.
Kodaviah had then reluctantly decided to ignore her too, folding his arms.
"FYI, I can ignore you so hard that it's like you don't even exist."
He wasn't wrong though to be fair, with the Triple Ks realising this a lot of times.
After that he had remained silent, which had pretty much happened as the two of them were together. Utter silence, that was what.
The two police officers were still looking for them, with Kodaviah and Brandy hiding in silence until they had given up on looking for them.
There was silence.
Brandy wanted to check if they had really gone but she wasn't really sure at the same time.
"What if it's a trick, Brandy? I don't want to risk anything."
"Yeah, but what if it isn't a trick, Kodaviah? Then what? Then what do we do?" Brandy wanted to know, Kodaviah just scanning her eyes.
Kodaviah had truly that they were using reverse psychology on them.
Brandy didn't although she didn't even know why.
She just didn't.
Simple as.
They had played Rock Paper Scissors about this and because Brandy won (3-2), they therefore had to go to the other side.
It had actually turned out that Kodaviah was right about everything and Brandy wasn't because when they were about to cross the road to get to the other side, that was when they had seen them.
"I knew it wasn't a trick!"
The police officers had caught them dead in their tracks, and they were still at that alleyway again.
It was a pretty huge one to be honest and now both of them had just landed themselves in some huge trouble.
**********
"It was an accident, I swear," Kodaviah had surrendered to both of them, after the light skinned security guard had said to them:
Explain to me why both of y'all were in a pawn shop earlier?
Now obviously, the police officers didn't go into the pawn shop, except from to arrest Santarico, although they had seen Kodaviah and Brandy go in there for some reason.
"How was it an accident? And how do you even know Santarico in the first place?"
Kodaviah had just told him that they were cousins: which had actually made everything worse because they were related.
The security guards had just looked at each other blankly but they didn't say anything else.
"We saw the sign, how comes y'all didn't?"
It was revealed that the light skinned security guard was named Quentin and the black one was called Ernestino instead.
They weren't paying attention, that was how they didn't know that there was a sign there.
