Yeah, so this book will be set in the UK, 'cause that's where I live rn, so inevitably it'll be easier for me to write a book set in there. But don't worry, I'll always use money conversions.
Chapter One
Family portraits.
Interesting things, weren't they?
They had always captured what had happened in the moment. The smiles, happiness and the laughter in general.
Some smiles were fake, some were real.
Majority of families would have argued moments before the photos were taken, maybe even after. But no one would have ever noticed that.
Kodaviah's house was almost full of those photos. He had three younger siblings, as well as his parents.
From an outside perspective, just looking at these photos would make one think his family was perfect or always well behaved.
But in real life?
His house was absolute madness, almost 24/7.
Like right now, for example.
He didn't really understand why his mother Aretha and his father Arsenio were planning a twenty second wedding anniversary party, but they were.
And Kodaviah didn't really see the point.
"I just don't get it," he had ranted to his parents, his arms crossed as both of them were sorting out decorations.
For a party that wasn't even today.
It was tomorrow instead.
Aretha was putting white, black and gold balloons up on the ceiling, with Arsenio in the meantime sorting out what would have gone on the dining table instead.
"Why y'all having a party to celebrate 22 years of marriage?" Kodaviah continued. "Like, yeah. I get twenty, maybe even 21. But not 22. Y'all are being seriously extra right now."
This wasn't the first time he had ranted about this, and this probably wasn't going to be the last time either, by the looks of things anyway.
They had both gotten married when they were 30- they were the same age now: 52.
Kodaviah sadly wasn't the only child in the house, although he really wanted to be.
He had two younger sisters called Annalise and Jaydaliah, as well as younger brother called Salvation.
Kodaviah was 19, visiting home from uni, whilst the girls were both 7 and Salvation was 5. They were running around the house like headless chickens right now, playing Tag.
"Will you shut up?" Aretha had condemned, stopping what she was doing to stare at Kodaviah spitefully from up the chair she was standing on.
"Look, how many times do we have to tell you? We have family members visiting round, and the day they're coming, aka tomorrow, is coincidentally the day of our 22nd wedding anniversary. So why not just have a party to celebrate?"
Then Arsenio had mentioned that even though Kodaviah didn't want this party to happen, he had to pretend as though that wasn't the case.
Plus not many couples lived to be married for this long... or they had divorced early, assuming they were still alive.
Kodaviah rolled his eyes.
He almost seriously didn't have time for this, at all.
When he was just about to leave though, that was when Aretha had called him back.
Kodaviah groaned to himself, but he inevitably didn't make that obvious.
"Oh, and Viah?" She trialed off. "Please help me buy some Ferrero Rochers at the local store. Savvy and Swiftly."
Savvy and Swiftly was the (fictional) local store that would have probably taken about ten or so minutes to walk to, from Kodaviah's house.
Aretha must have been kidding if she wanted him to go to that store.
And buy Ferrero Rochers on top of that: aka one of the most expensive chocolates in all of the UK.
On average, Ferrero Rochers were about £6, which were equivalent to $7.91 or €6.70. It didn't really help much that Savvy and Swiftly was a gigantic store.
Plus Christmas was a month from now, which was exactly when Ferrero Rochers had gone out of stock quicker.
"Ferrero Rochers?! Are you kidding? I ain't spending £6 on chocolate."
"Your mother will pay you back," Arsenio told him. "And from our last party, we realised that a lot of people liked them when we bought them. Some people had even asked us for seconds, but we didn't have any."
So basically.
They wanted him to buy two.
They wanted him to spend almost all of his allowance (£20 = $26.40 / €22.30) on chocolate.
Was Kodaviah a walking bank or something?
No, no he wasn't.
"And how do you know their taste in chocolate hasn't changed since last year?" He asked them intelligently, his arms still crossed.
Their last party was last year.
For their 21st wedding anniversary.
Which made perfect sense.
"Just buy them, here's the money."
At least he was getting paid for this, although he had to move quickly as the line for Savvy and Swiftly was hardly ever short.
Thank God Kodaviah could drive.
Reluctantly, he had then taken the money away from his mum, although he couldn't have left the house just yet as he had encountered another problem.
His siblings.
Salvation was crying, constantly tapping Kodaviah as he was about to put on his leather jacket.
"Kodaviah!!" He was in tears for some reason. "Jayda's being rude to me!"
He rolled his eyes.
"Look Salvation, I really don't have time for this right now. I gotta go Savvy and Swiftly to get some Ferrero Rochers for the party."
He wouldn't stop crying.
Kodaviah had to do something.
Salvation was crying in the first place because his sisters had made fun of him when he had tripped over as they had played tag.
He didn't hurt himself, as in no wounds or anything, he was just really upset.
"This is why y'all shouldn't be running around the house like headless chickens," Kodaviah yelled at them, when he was talking to all of them. "You two, apologise."
Grudgingly, the girls had apologised to Salvation, Kodaviah in the meantime breathing a sigh of relief when that was over.
Until Annalise wanted to know where he was actually going, talking to him on the staircase as the rest of them were talking about something.
"It doesn't matter. I'll be back soon."
"How long will you take?" Jaydalia wanted to know, joining Annalise.
But Kodaviah had just given both of them a dirty look, not saying anything else.
They understood that, so they had let him go.
Kodaviah was just happy as he was finally leaving this chaotic house.
Savvy and Swiftly wasn't any better though.
At all.
