Chapter 17 - Bad memories

Zhu Li and Asami reach Republic City after more than one hour of driving. During the car ride Asami told Zhu Li the whole story, and she is still in disbelief. They decide to go to Zhu Li's apartment, because it seems to be a safe option for now. Besides, Korra can't return to Republic City, because Chief Beifong told her to stay away from the city if she wants to keep her job.

"Well Asami, I guess it is Korra's job to catch you, but handcuffing you to the bed and even to a car door is just too much" Zhu Li says as she makes tea for the both of them.

"While I was trying to free myself from the handcuffs, Korra talked in her sleep" Asami suddenly says and looks down at the floor.

"What did she say?" Zhu Li asks and furrows her eyebrows.

"She said and I quote: "No, no, don't go 'Sami!" She even used my nickname!" Asami exclaims and looks at Zhu Li who looks at her with a raised eyebrow.

"Well that is very weird, do you think it could mean... you know" Zhu Li replies as she hands Asami a cup of tea.

"That she has feelings for me?" Asami questions as she takes a sip of her tea.

"Yeah probably..." Zhu li answers and both of them are silent for a while.

Zhu Li looks around the room and debates whether or not she should ask about Asami's feelings. It would be interesting to know, so she decides to ask.

"And what about you? Do you still have feelings for her?" Zhu Li asks and regrets it as Asami spits out her tea and starts to cough like crazy. Zhu Li immediately stands up to pat her back. Some seconds pass and Asami finally stops coughing.

"Are you alright?!" Zhu Li asks worried.

"Yeah... I am fine, I think."

"I guess you don't want to answer the question?"

"No, I think I should finally open up to someone... I couldn't even talk to Bolin about it" Asami answers and tries to gather as much courage as she can.

"Take your time, there is no rush."

"I... um, still have feelings for her" Asami finally admits after denying it for so long when someone asked her about it.

"I never got over Korra, but I kinda moved on from her, but then suddenly she appeared in my apartment and with one heartbeat everything was back. It felt so weird, but I know exactly that I still love her a lot, and I can't imagine my life without her. I know we didn't see each other for months, and that hurt me a lot" Asami admits while averting her eyes from Zhu Li and looking at the floor.

"Do you...want her back?" Zhu Li asks carefully.

"I mean... I love Korra a lot, like I love her so much that it already hurts. However, so much shit happenend and I don't even know if she changed. What if she didn't? What if this relationship will fail again? Plus, she is an officer who is hunting me down and wants to arrest me" Asami exclaims and puts her head into her hands.

Zhu Li scoots closer to Asami to pat her back.

"Asami, I actually believe that Korra has changed in the past few months. Just imagine, she had nearly a year to think about her actions, and I am sure she used this time to work on herself. You saw her talking in her sleep and it was even about you!"

"But when she was in my apartment, she accused me of cheating on her with Kuvira. Especially when she saw Kuvira kiss me" Asami replies and immediately looks at Zhu Li in shock. She forgot that she didn't tell her that detail.

"Kuvira kissed you? In front of Korra? When?!" Zhu Li questions with wide eyes.

"Before you think she kissed me with consent, no she didn't and she literally forced herself on me and kissed me. Unfortunately, Korra saw it and believes that I cheated on her in the past, because Kuvira tried to seduce me many times. And then in the apartment, she was really upset and didn't even believe a word I said! I don't think she changed!" Asami shouts.
