Terror and dread coursed my veins whilst under the florescent glow of the street lamp. I had been in town for nearly an hour, all I could hear were questions.
'Where is her husband?'
'Has she been turned?'
'WENCH! INFLUENCE OF THE DEVIL HIMSELF!'
How I entirely loathed this part of my marriage. Our story was a beautiful one, though.
In a small village, one that no one could quite name, sat a castle.
Deep in the depths of the castle stayed a lonely, lonely man. By himself he would be for days and days on end, finding comfort in nothing but his books. On a foggy night in late fall, by chance, a beautiful woman passed by the castle in need of directions in the village. Her beauty was beyond compare, no other maiden had stricken his eyes before in this way.
They became friends; closer than any. On another night, dark and foggy as the first, he asked the court the beautiful woman. The town had started the rumors rather quick. He was a vampire, cursed and dammed to hell for all of eternity. His existence would outlast any, even the ones he loves the most.
When the woman found this out, he became scared. Afraid to be subject to the darkness once more whisked away by chances he had frayed one too many times. By any common error, though, she only smiled and took his large hands into her own. Later, once more in the fall, he kneeled down and asked for her living hand in marriage.
My head swirled in memories recalling the meeting of my husband. He cared so much for me, yet not enough to shatter the rumors that plagued me.
I did not mind, however.
My legs effortlessly ushered over each part of the cracked and dirty cobblestone, back from each store of the rough day and to my home. We had a carriage and driver; I just preferred to walk and look at the gorgeous scenery. Levi hated it, however.
The trees, a dark spruce, coated in a mix of thick fog and mist. The village always seemed to carry an ounce of gloom, but no falter in the mornings that rose over the breath taking forest.
I had grown to know the forest so well. Levi would refuse to quench his cursed thirst, so instead he opted for animal blood.
My eyes grew over the dark castle in front of me, gates and all. The estate was rather old, dating back one hundred years or so. The interior was amazing, though. Themes of black, white, and gold, all coming together to make elegant plots in each room.
Smiling, I opened the gates, walking through and down the cleaner cobblestone path. Upon arrival of the doors, I took the metal handle in the lion's mouth and tapped three times.
"Who goes there! Foul wench!" A joking tone poraged through my husband's mouth as he over looked me from the balcony.
"My sir, let me in! For I am only a fair lady of the night, in need of a place to stay!" I shouted back, containing the laughter that nearly spilled when he stumbled back into the doors and came rushing down.
The entrance opened, revealing my husband standing with a rare grin spread on his features.
He came up to me, softly taking the small of my back into his cold hand and ushering me into the warm living area.
"Welcome home, love. How was town?" He asked, taking the burlap sacs of food from my hands and traveling into the kitchen.
"Oh, everything was normal I suppose. Slags talking of our marriage, old men calling us 'devil spawn'." His chuckle came deep, stopping when he noticed the knotted features on my face.
"What is it, dear?" His freezing hand came up to my check, caressing it softly. I sighed, laying my hands atop his braid shoulders.
"I am tired of it, Levi. The stares, the rumors, it is all too much." My head came close to his chest, his arms wrapping around me.
"(F/N), I am sorry. My name brings no good, I only ask you bare with me." He cradled me softly, swaying back and forth to the prancing light of the fireplace.
"I suppose so. It only annoys me." He nodded, pressing a chaste kiss onto my head. "No mind, dear. You are evermore beautiful and enchanting than any foul beast that village refers to as a woman."
I laughed into his sculpted chest, fiddling with the bell sleeves of his collared shirt and nuzzling into his cravat. "I love you, Count Levi. More each day, and enough for a million lifetimes."
Levi held me closer, stopping swaying. We looked into each others eyes; his crimson ones burning like a fire.
His lips interlocked with my own for only a moment before tearing away, leaving me lethargic.
"I love you too, my (F/N)."
