"I said, f*ck off!" Ella repeated.

Suddenly she was engulfed in black flames. Usually, she was invincible to them but today, it wasn't the case. The black fire was really painful. "Ugh!"

But suddenly the pain stopped. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw her best friend, her eyes glowing in all its glory. It was the first time Ella had seen her activate her ability. She remembered what the ability was. Pain resistance. Ella could see how useful it was now. You could concentrate without the pain getting in your way.

But she seemed to be straining to  keep it up, though. Ella figured 4.8's couldn't possibly protect her from angry 8.2's. Ella knew she had to move quick.

She charged up some fire, and threw them at John. He simply deflected it with a black fire circling around him.

"Ha! Weakling asshole!" shouted the blue-haired dude. Damn it, I completely forgot he was there. She shot a flame at him, but he dodged. But just then, she felt a little pain stinging all around her. She looked at her best friend, who mouthed, I can't keep it up much longer. Ella nodded.

She concentrated really hard, and eventually charged up a flame that was twice as hot and powerful than the one she first used against John. She aimed. I can't miss, or else I'll cause great damage to the building. Even if I can put out my own fires, it will still be a big deal.

John's black fire danced around him, and the turquoise fire almost got through. At the last second, though, he smirked and his fire completely disintegrated Ella's flames. How can he just stay nonchalant like that!?

A sudden plan formed in her head, and she smiled.

"Hey weaklings!! I'll bet my ability that you couldn't beat me with a 10.0 ability!!"

John's aura became more powerful as his anger chart shot up. "You dare-"

"Shut up! No one wants to hear from you! Who said you're my boss!?"

"SHUT YOUR MOUTH UP!!!!!" John charged at her with his bare fists, blinded by his anger.

Ella dodged, making John slam his own face into the wall. She took that time to run, run away as fast as she could, which reminded her of the gingerbread man escaping from his factory. She shook her head. Why am I thinking of childish stories when I should be worrying about my life?

She dashed into a classroom, and slammed the door shut. By then, the black fire on her had burned out already.

"Why, hello!" the teacher greeted her. "You must be Ella. I'm Ms. Rosalind. Do take a seat, and next time, don't be late!"

"Sorry, I...got into a fight." Ella  explained, her emotions torn between surprise and shame. The classroom she had run into was her homeroom, but yet, she had been late.

Ella sat down in an empty seat, when she remembered she'd left her best friend in the hallway, all by herself. Ella felt more ashamed of herself. How could I do that!? I hope she ran away to somewhere safe! She didn't pay attention to the teacher.

At the end of class, a random boy turned around. "Hey... why is your face bruised? And why is it covered in burns?"

"From the fight," Ella said breezily.

Another kid looked at her in disgust. "Who were you even fighting, a mid-tier!? We're all sick of you low tiers clogging up the space all the time!!"

Ella was offended. "Excuse you!? What's wrong with low tiers? And I'm a high tier, you dumb cluck! Don't just assume! And I got into this fight with this 8.2 angry dude named John-"

"Hold up," a third kid interjected. "You got into a fight with John and made it out!?"

Ella shrugged. "So what?"

Ms. Rosalind raised her eyebrow. "Abilities are abilities, children. So... let's talk about something else during this free time!"

The kids resumed going back to what they were doing, but they couldn't seem to take their eyes off Ella. Ella ignored them, and went back to mourning over her best friend. She didn't notice a turquoise-haired girl with her hair done in a coil fading into a deep ocean-blue with a pair of emerald-green eyes walking over to her. She was about Ella's age, and had Ella been paying attention, she would've noticed that the girl was wearing a vest. Ella would question her how she could survive with a vest on.

"Hello," the girl greeted Ella. "I'm Elaine."
