"Mhmmm," Ella replied, not paying attention, still lost in her thoughts.
"Hello? Anybody there?" Elaine swatted in front of Ella.
"Mmmm... Oh! yeah, I'm here," Ella said, jolting back to reality.
Elaine smiled at her sweetly. "How's your day so far?"
"Interesting in a bad way. You see, this really angry dude named John barbecued me, I lost track of my best friend, and this stupid. Damn. Vest is still itching!!" Ella told her.
"Oh... well, I guess that's bad," Elaine replied. "Where did you go before transferring to Wellston?"
"Vallord. It's mostly elites and mid-tiers. My parents were elites, too."
"Ooh, nice!" Suddenly Elaine's smile became more mischievous. Ella felt like she knew what was coming.
"So... what kind of ability do you have?" Elaine asked. "You must be really strong to escape from John! You're a 7.9 or an 8.0, I presume?"
Suddenly the whole class had an excuse to turn around and look at her. They didn't just look-they boggled daggers at her. Man, I didn't know hearing people bragging about some stupid common ability was entertaining.
"Well, my ability is Fire Manipulation, but I'm only a 5.2," Ella said.
Suddenly the room was complete pandemonium.
"How could she escape from John if she's only a 5.2!?"
"I know right! And, because of his sidekick, Zeke, you can't possibly escape him."
"I thought John was undefeated and inescapable!
"Does she have some other kind of power we don't know about?"
"Does she have a secret like John used to?"
"Is she-"
The bell rang, cutting off the students' gossiping off. Ella decided to try and heal her burns. The bruises weren't that big of a deal, because bruises stop hurting eventually, and they heal on their own. Healing burns were a power of hers, because the fire caused the burns, and Ella could manipulate anything that had to do with fire. Her eyes glowed, and the burns faded away.
Now she had Ethma to focus on. She hoped her best friend was safe. I should've asked for her number so I can contact her.
Ella opened the door a crack and peeped left and right. It seemed like John and Zeke were nowhere around, so she stepped outside. The classrooms left and right looked like 12th grade homeroom classes. Ella waited.
Ethma came out of one of the classrooms.
"Whew!" Ella breathed a sigh of relief. "You're safe!"
Ethma rolled her eyes. "Do you think I was stupid enough to hang around!? Of course not!"
"I guess not...?"
"By the way, I checked my schedule, and I found out that we have our next class together!" Ethma smiled cheerfully. "Let's go!"
***
Ella didn't pay much attention in class. She kept trying to remember where she had met John before... maybe at New Bostin? Vallord? And who was Seraphina? Did she have a connection with John? She decided to ask Ethma about that later.
"So who would like to explain what calculus is?" asked the math teacher. Her eyes scanned the room. "Ella? Would you please explain the concept of calculus?"
"Oh! Um..." Ella did remember her learning calculus back at Vallord. She told all she knew about it, and the teacher nodded approvingly.
"Correct, Ella. Now, as I was saying..."
The teacher rambled on, and eventually the class was over.
***
"Wow, I learned a lot about calculus in that class!" Ethma said. She started spewing out facts about calculus.
Ella was still thinking. She kept trying to recount her experience with John. But she couldn't.
Suddenly she bumped into somebody. It was a half orange-haired, half black-haired dude. He was apparently walking with a pink-haired girl and a redheaded boy.
"Sorry," they said in unison.
"It's alright," said Ella.
"Hey, I think I never seen you before," the half-and-half haired boy said to her, one eyebrow raised.
The pinkette sighed in exasperation. "Isen, just because you're an information specialist doesn't mean you know everyone in this whole entire school!"
The red-haired dude's eyes widen with surprise. "Hey, weren't you the girl that was able to escape from John?" He looked over at the boy who was supposedly Isen. "Dude, did you know about this?"
Isen looked surprised, as if he suddenly recognized Ella, too. "Oh yeah! It was all over the place. Talking about a brown haired girl with turquoise eyes, managing to run away from John. I just didn't recognize her." He said the last part harshly, as if daring anybody to challenge his information specialist skills.
"Okay, okay," the redhead said. He turned back to Ella. "Hey, your name is Ella right? Nice to meet you." He shook her hand. "I'm Blyke, this is Isen-" he pointed to the half and half haired boy-"And this is Remi," he gestured to the pink-haired girl. "She's the current queen." Hold up, Ella thought. Was that pride in his voice when he said that Remi was Queen?
"So... she's the strongest female in the school," Ella said. "What is her ability? And her level?"
"Lightning. She's a 6.0 now. A god tier!" Blyke said. "Like dude, there's no way I would've become that strong."
Remi playfully punched him on the arm. "You can improve, though. But no doing you-know-what."
Just then, a punch was aimed at Ella, not as gentle as the one Remi gave Blyke. She barely had time to dodge. Once her vision cleared, she could see that it was the same blue-haired asshole that had caused her trouble in the morning when she was trying to get to class.
Zeke, the blue haired asshole.
