"What!?" Ella exclaimed. "It's not allowed? I thought you could talk to anyone here!"
"Well, no," Ethma said. "We were supposed to keep this discreet from the new kids here. We didn't want them to freak out, pestering her with questions, because we figured that, well, she'd been through enough already.."
"But how is it going to help if they are oblivious?"
Ethma shrugged. "That's how it works here. That's why we have Kings, Queens, and Jacks to enforce the hierarchy."
Ella was baffled. Back at Vallord, sure, she had Royals, but those Royals welcomed freshmen, helped people with their homework, and broke up fights fairly. They were like people that watched over you, not people who just beat up someone else for some stupid unrelated reason.
"I didn't know it worked like that-"
Just then, the bell rang, cutting Ella off. She heard Isen telling them to hurry back to class, and yelling, "Chocolate cake today at lunch!!"
Ella thought, Chocolate cake? She loved chocolate cake. It was her favorite dessert, and no matter how much you ate, you just couldn't get too much. Her mouth watered just at the thought of it.
In a trance, she walked back to the school building, and wandered off to her class. Surprisingly, she already knew most of her way around the school. She walked into science class, and she tried to focus and take notes without thinking of chocolate cake.
***
It was finally lunch! Yes!!!! Ella thought. She ran to the cafeteria. It was pretty much deserted. Ha. Getting a dessert in a deserted area. She ran in the aisle, and grabbed a tray, and filled it. She ran to the dessert station. Yes! The cake is still there! She grabbed it.
She was heading over to the tables when she heard someone say, "Give it to me."
She turned around to see John staring at her. "Give the cake to me."
Ella almost laughed. She couldn't imagine someone as powerful as John demanding things over a childish chocolate cake. But then again, anyone would fight over it.
She cradled the plate. "And what if I don't?"
"Then this." John's eyes glowed.
Ella scoffed. This time, apparently, Zeke wasn't with him. "How are you going to copy abilities if no one has theirs active?"
Ella got her answer. He charged at her with nothing but his fists. Ella guessed that he could probably fight really well. Too bad for him that she could also fight.
She dodged his hit, and faked a strike towards his shoulder, which he dodged, but then she punched his gut. Too bad for Ella that he recovered quickly. He lunged at her, and Ella decided she couldn't keep that up while holding the tray.
Her own eyes glowed, and her palms burst into flames. She hovered her hand over the cake.
"Deactivate your ability," she said, "or else no one gets the cake!"
John stopped in his tracks. He stood there for a while. He seemed to be thinking about something. Ella didn't let her guard down, though. He could be tricking her into thinking he was passive now, and that he wouldn't attack.
Suddenly he charged. He probably decided that even if he did not get the cake, he would still beat Ella up. Unfortunately for him, Ella also had a few tricks up her sleeve. She picked up the plate, and held it up, making John slam head into the cake. His face filled with chocolate goo.
Ella took that time to punch him, and then run out of the cafeteria. She bumped into Ethma.
"Hey, careful," Ethma sad. "What's wrong?"
"I had John on my tail," Ella explained.
"W-what? You escaped him again?" Ethma said, stunned. "Wait till the school hears about this! I'll bet it's going to be in the school paper!" She bounded off, presumably to tell everyone.
Weird school, Ella thought. Welp, now I don't have lunch. I hope John doesn't come after me. Ella ran down the hallways, hoping to lose John from the twists and turns. After a while, she decided to stop. She looked around. She was in a hallway near homeroom. Just then, she spotted Remi, Isen and Blyke chattering and walking. They were heading towards the lunch room.
"Hi, Ella," Remi said, spotting Ella.
"Guess what Ella? Everyone is calling you the Trickster. Word is that you escaped John about ten minutes ago when you outsmarted him. Is that true?" Isen asked.
"Yeah," Ella said, huffing and puffing.
"Is it true you slammed the chocolate cake into his face?"
"Yeah."
"And you literally made him bash his own head against the wall the other day?"
"Yes," Ella answered, getting a bit irritated. "Look, can we not talk about it? It makes me sound like some sort of snake that avoids punishment."
"Hear that?" Remi said, elbowing Isen. "You're making her uncomfortable."
"Fine, okay. I-"
At that moment, Zeke came hurtling out of nowhere and directed a punch at Ella.
A/N: Zeke... just leave people alone, please. Thank you.
Okay, so none of you commented whether I should introduce Ella's family this time or at chapter 20, or somewhere. My first choice was to do it seperately, but I wanted to leave it up to you guys. You can expect the stats soon.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter! Please have a safe and happy rest of your day! Until then, see you!
