Ella sat down on her dorm bed, pulling her covers close to her. She went to sleep as soon as her head touched her pillow. She began dreaming as soon as she went to sleep.
Actually, it wasn't a dream. It was a memory.
***
It was the day before Ella left for Wellston. She walked along the sidewalk on the busy, bustling street. Her friend, Lyson, walked alongside her.
"Wow, can't believe this'll be the last time I'll see in you in a year," Lyson told her.
"Yeah, I know right," Ella replied, taking in the scenery of the city.
The glass buildings flashed in the bright afternoon sun. Bushes and trees that were emerald green surrounded the bright skyscrapers that surrounded them. Little shops and carts were placed next to the tall office buildings.
Everything seemed perfect about Vallord. Even in the urban area, there were still snippets of nature in it. Like the little pond right next to the trail that was near Ella's house.
Ella knew that she would be going to the most powerful school in the region tomorrow. At first, she was really excited when she heard that she had been accepted in. Now, walking around the city for the last time in a year, she didn't feel the same way.
She wanted to stay there longer. Ella didn't really favor the idea of saying goodbye to the place that she had lived most of her life in. She felt the exact same way as she did at New Bostin.
Ella was jolted out of her thoughts because Lyson was tapping her on the shoulder.
"What?" Ella said, annoyed.
"Look, there's an ability gauger!" Lyson pointed to a cart. A big sign read, YOUR ABILITY GAUGED RIGHT HERE! "You might even be a high-tier! Hey, look, it says 5+ gets a prize!"
"Uhm, aren't you a high tier?" Ella asked Lyson.
"Yeah, I am, but I already know my level. Anyways, if you are, you get a prize! Wonder what it is?"
Ella sighed. He had a point, so she nodded.
The moment she tilted her head, Lyson started dragging her by the wrist to the booth.
"Sir, we would like this lady gauged," Lyson told the gauger.
The gauger had long orange hair and eyes that were a mix of red and orange.
"Yes, of course!" the gauger said as Lyson gave him ten dollars.
His eyes glowed as his ability activated. He took Ella's hand, reading her level.
"Whoa!" He looked up at Ella. "Miss, you're very talented. You're a 5.2!"
"See, I told you!" Lyson patted her on the back.
"Voila! A cute little bear for a cute little lady!"
Little!? Ella thought. I ain't a little lady anymore-
"What, what? That's all?" Lyson asked, frowning at the "prize".
"Sorry, sir, that's all we've got," the gauger told Lyson sadly.
Not wanting to be rude, Ella nodded politely.
As they walked along the sidewalk, Ella said, "I'll probably donate this to someone. I don't really need a teddy bear..."
"Yeah, how about there?" Lyson pointed to a box down the street that said, 'Donate things for children in need!'
Ella nodded as she started to head for the box. She dropped the teddy bear in.
Little did she know that when she dropped it in, a toy sword pierced through the stuffing of the teddy bear, and the circuit fell out, blinking.
***
Ella's alarm started dinging wildly, jolting her out of her dream. Ella groaned as she sat up. She smashed her hand on the button, and started changing into her uniform.
***
Ding, dong, ding, dong.
The bell rang as the class ended. Ella walked out of the classroom. She was met by a girl who looked familiar.
"Hey," the girl said.
She wore her magenta hair up in a ponytail. Her sky-blue eyes now looked stormy. Her jacket barely had any wrinkles.
She was starting to look like...
"Sera?" Ella whispered. "What happened?"
"Call me Seraphina," Sera-er, Seraphina said.
Seraphina ignored Ella as she started heading towards a classroom, smoothing out her notes.
"Hey, I thought you skipped class!" Ella said.
Seraphina met her eyes with that cold glare. Her eyes were no longer the color of the sky on lazy, summer afternoons; they were now icy.
"I need to raise my grades." Seraphina gave a terse answer, ponytail swishing behind her, pompously striding down the hall.
"God, what the hell happened there?" Ella wondered aloud.
***
Ring, ring.
Ella answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Hi, it's Sera," the voice said a the other end. "Meet me at my dorm."
"Okay, see you there." Ella put her phone in her pocket.
She jogged over to Sera's dormitory.
Sera was sitting there, arms crossed, ready to talk.
"Hello," she said in a sophisticated voice.
"Hi," Ella replied. "Why're you acting this way?"
Sera-er, Seraphina, looked like she was about to scowl and retort something, but she surprised Ella. She whispered, "It's part of a plan to get John back."
Ella was confused. "Say what????"
"Getting John back," Sera responded, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"How?"
"Well, it's sorta complicated. But... there's hope."
Ella felt like her brain cells were shooting out of her head one by one. Sera - Seraphina said it like, number one: he was a legend, two: she said: 'Get John back', like he had accidentally blasted off in a rocket to Mars and she was on a mission to get him back.
"So... how long are you planning to keep this up?"
"Until John returns. If not, I'll try Plan B." Seraphina said smoothly, as if she had been rehearsing it for the longest time.
"And, what is Plan B?"
