It's been a week since Melody had a goodnight's sleep. She had started falling asleep in class so much that Alice even offered to make her an awake potion they'd been learning about in Potions class. Though she shortly considered it, Melody remembered the side effects that could happen if the potion was not done right, so she declined the offer. On top of her lack of rest, Melody was concerned because she hadn't been able to get her magic to work since the night under the Purple Flametree. She had tried over and over to get it to work, but something held it back. Contrastly, Alice did find some information on the Moon Orchid. She had been spending hours and hours at the library trying to research it, but she had no luck, until today. Today was the day.
"I've found something that you and Rowan should know. We should discuss this at lunch," Alice whispered to Melody as they walked down the hall to Spell Casting.
Alice's words went straight through Melody's ears as they walked past a few people giggling in a group near the girl bathrooms. She wasn't paying any attention to Alice and just kept walking as Alice talked.
"Alyx was right about the flower though. We could use it..." Alice added looking at Melody, who was still zoned out into a day-dream like state. "Melody, are you listening to me?!"
Melody looked up, "Huh. Yeah!" She had completely let whatever Alice said in one ear and out the other. She strained to remember what exactly Alice had just said, but her mind remained empty.
Alice rolled her eyes and put her hand on her hip, "You totally weren't."
"Sorry, Alice." Melody punctuated her apology with a yawn, "with the lack of sleep and everything weighing on my mind right now, I've just been zoned out all day."
Ever since the strange occurrences last week, Melody's desire to get more information about her mother from the Headmistress grew. Frustratingly the Headmistress has been occupied by a bunch of meetings with the Government Of Magic lately, according to Rowan. One afternoon when Melody decided to go to the Headmistress's office between classes, Alice had asked her why she was going. Of course, Melody had to think of a lie and told her it was about her lack of sleep lately. Luckily Alice bought it and didn't ask any more questions.
"I really hope you get to talk to the Headmistress soon. You're falling behind in class, mate." Alice admitted softly as they stopped at the doorway of their class.
Melody yawned, "I'm just stressed about you know why." Melody looked down at her feet and let her face fall as they walked.
Alice quickly glanced down at the floor too, as though acknowledging the gravity of Melody's feelings. "I hear you, mate."
Alice smiled trying to change the subject, "Hey, but what I've found will definitely cheer you up."
Alice patted Melody's shoulder encouragingly before they entered the approaching doorway. Melody responded with a shy smile, trying her best to look happy about the promise of news, although she didn't think it would solve her problems. She knew that Alice was trying her hardest and putting in a lot of work to help them with this search, the least Melody could do was act positive about it. They both walked into the classroom and took their seats. Not even ten minutes in, Melody found herself resting her head on the table. She reluctantly began dozing off, losing yet another opportunity to catch the lesson. It was certain; today was going to be a long day for her.
Soon it was lunchtime, and before Melody knew it, Alice had grabbed Melody's arm after she had left the lunch line and ushered her to a table in the back of the cafeteria. She could see Rowan waiting for them alone. They were trying to keep the others out of it by sitting in the outskirts where it was darkened by the lack of light. No one dared to sit back there in solitude due to its dark and eerie nature. Melody placed her tray on the table and sat on the other side of Rowan. Rowan had his headphones in once again and was tapping the song's beat on the table. He smiled up at her as she took the seat in front of him. Melody couldn't help but blush in response. Rowan was handsome to look at with his ivory skin tone, light brown eyes, short hair, and of course his awesome jawline. Something about his presence always sent butterflies into her stomach.
