Melody was confused as to who was at the door and what they wanted from them. Their mother walked to the front door where a dark, tall figure was standing with its head down.
"Good evening, is this the Sullivan's home?" He had a rusty yet strong voice, with a slight Irish accent. "Yes it is, you must be Dr. Coblinks." Ms. Sullivan gestured to the man to come in. Looking up at the family he said, "Think you, ma'am." As he walked into the house, the girls felt like the man was a murderer, and they were next on his list. The man wore a long black robe with a hood that covered his face, he was about six feet tall. He wouldn't make eye contact until Ms. Sullivan closed the door. The man took off his hood, as he did Melody noticed his ears and the lightness of his skin. He had light blonde hair that was almost white and his eyes were golden like the sun.
"He is an Elf," she whispered to Rose. Sensing her magical energy, he looked at her.
"Melody Sullivan, I am here to take you to Websten's School For Magicalians. This school is going to help you learn and control your magic. It is the finest School of Magic in the state of Florida."
Seeing Melody's confusion still on her face he said, " Yes, I know it's all new to you and yes, you haven't yet used magic before, first you need to receive your family magical heirloom; which is located at the school." Never hearing of having a magical heirloom before, Melody questioned, "What exactly is a family ''magical'' heirloom? And what does ''Magicalians'' mean?" Gesturing her hands into physical and metaphorical air quotes. Knowing that her mom left out the part about the heirloom and the meaning of the word Magicalians, she gave her mother a dirty look.
"Magicalians' means, people or creatures that possess the power of magic. Therefore, anyone that can do magic is a Magicalian," Dr. Coblinks added, " And a Magic heirloom is when a family member leaves an item behind, that stores the next witch's or warlock's power source."
Feeling left out Rose asked, "Why is she going to this school now and why haven't we seen our mom do magic, or whatever the things people do with magic? Shouldn't she be able to do it?" Rose looked more angry than concerned. She was also upset that if it was all true, why didn't she get the magical genes? It was so unfair, but she remembered that if she had magic, her life wouldn't be the same way it is now; and she loved her life, even if her mother always yelled at her for coming home late. Still, something inside her made her wish she possessed magic. Their mother then explained why she couldn't.
"Girls, the reason why I can't use magic is because- I had to give it up to be with your father. At the end of my years at school, I fell in love with your father causing me to give up my powers to live with him as a human-" She paused, "there was a price to pay, being that only my second child would be able to wield magic. The same goes with your grandmother, but if we stayed and married someone in the magical world, we could have had multiple children who would be born with magic." Sounding disappointed in herself she continued, "With marrying your father I gave my magic to the heirloom, this way you could receive powers." She looked into Melody's eyes with love.
"Why couldn't you keep it, even though you married dad?" Melody was unaware of these rules that were placed before her. Grabbing her daughter's hands her mother replied gently, " I loved an unmagical being to have a family. To have you. The rules are there for a reason, I had no choice. It was the law." Tears of joy and sadness mixed in her eyes as she thought of how if she hadn't given up her magic, she wouldn't have her loving girls. Putting that aside she brightened up with cheer in her voice, "So Dr. Coblinks, what are the materials needed for her to begin school? I hope they haven't changed."
Making a spell with the waves of his hands, Dr. Coblinks began to make the wind blow and a bright light appeared in the air. There was a small flash and a paper fell to the table. It was the list of materials that Melody needed to get. She reached for the paper, but her mother was far too quick. Looking over the list she read.
"You need a black robe, spell notebooks, three textbooks for each of your class this year and a cauldron. I guess we have to go shopping!"
"Where in the world are we going to get that stuff, mom? I have never seen a store that sells cauldrons around here!" Melody was still pretty mad about the whole thing, she still didn't want to go.
"What if I don't want to go." Interrupting her protest Dr. Coblinks warned her, "If you don't attend the school you will have to give up your magic. No one else in your family will ever receive the gift. To warn you, the process isn't pleasant, but it is up to you." He placed his hands on the table and made direct eye contact with Melody. The way he made it sound made her feel like it was hard to make a witch give up their powers. Scared from seeing her mother's gaze turn from love into fear, she nodded in agreement.
"Okay, I'll go." As Dr. Coblinks got up from the chair, he began to tell Melody's mother the date that he will be returning to take her to the school. Rose wanted her sister to go, as she knew that her sister would love to be a magical being. Rose got up from the table and hugged Melody from the back. Melody was so overwhelmed, but Rose wasn't; maybe she knew or maybe it made sense to her. Melody zoned out after agreeing to go. Even though she wished she was a witch many times, this time she didn't want to leave her loving sister behind. She had to go, for her mom, for her family, and for Rose; She had to go. As soon as her mother opened the door to let Dr. Coblinks out, Melody stood up with pride.
"When will I start school?" Her sister was still at her side, emitting support. "Dr. Coblinks said that the semester already started, but if you can get the stuff on the list by Thursday you could get your room and begin your classes next week." Her excitement was written all over her face. "We have to go to the Enchanted Forest! That's where we can find your textbooks and spell notebooks, then we need to see an old friend of mine." Looking at her girl she noticed that they needed rest.
"Okay. You two off to bed. We have a long day ahead of us and we need to get up early if we want to get everything done." Rose smiled.
"Mom, let me help with the dishes," grabbing the plate where she had been sitting. " No you two need to go to bed-" their mother demanded- "Now!" Still in shock, the girls headed off to bed. Not asking any more questions they went to their rooms. They were just too overwhelmed to know any more of their mother's secret crazy life. Melody couldn't sleep too nervous about the uncertain day ahead of her. Questions and thoughts raced inside her head as she slipped on her pj's upon entering her bedroom. Then she got into bed still with the questions roaming around inside her. The door creaked open, it was Rose.
"Do you mind if I sleep in here tonight?" With a smile on her face Melody agreed to let her stay. Laying next to each other the both fell asleep, knowing that they would always have each other's backs
