There was nothing. Darkness was only there. Melody could hear the sound of her own breathing, fast rapid breathing. She forgot that Lydia was there until she muttered something. The sound of metal clingy followed. The darkness was slightly lit with a flame of a lantern. Lydia was neely down next to Melody's mother with a small lantern. Looking to where her mother's lifeless body, tears filled her eyes once again. She hoped her mother was alright. Lydia looked up at Melody before she got down next to them.
"I'm afraid to say," she began to cry too.
"I'm afraid to say that she's not going to make it." Lydia couldn't bear to see the woman she loved many years ago was gone or to say the words.
"No. No. No." Melody refused to have that be said, but it was true. Her mother was gone, there was no way she was coming back.
"There has to be some way to save her," Melody said through her sadness.
"There just has to be! Can't you heal her with magic?" She wanted her mother to be okay, she wanted her to be alive.
"No, I can't. If I could I would have, but I can't," Lydia said while holding back other emotions.
Lydia had just lost the love of her life, her hero. Now her love was gone and she couldn't save her life.
"Melody, your mother meant a lot to me. Serene was,-" Melody stopped her before she could finish.
"She was the love of your life."
Melody could tell that there was some type of romance between Lydia and her mother. She could tell, her mother was acting like a teenage girl who was talking to her crush for the first time. There were sparks between them, and Melody knew it.
"How did you know?" Lydia was shocked at what Melody said. They'd always tried to keep it a secret, but it wasn't.
"I could tell that you two were close, just friends when she told me. Then when you just started to talk about how my mom saved you. She lit up and I have never seen her so happy before," Melody said while she held her mother's hand.
Her heart sank and broke in a million pieces. She couldn't believe her mother was gone. They both sat there in sorrow, crying out with their lost loved one. They cry in the silent darkness. After a few minutes, Lydia broke the silence.
"I just don't understand why someone would do this to a harmless person. Unless,-" fear shot inside Lydia. "We have to get you out of here. Now!"
"What are you talking about Lydia, we can't live without making sure the person who killed my mom doesn't get away with this. What about the person who saved us? They need our help."
Melody was still a little curious as to whom had saved her. She knew that the person who did was the same one outside her house. She could feel it. But why was it following her?
"We can't. You have no magic!" Her eyes stared to the floor, as she paused. "I have no magic," Lydia admitted. Melody did understand, Lydia was an elf.
"What do you mean by that? You're an elf aren't you? You have to have magic." She was still new to this life.
"I can't. I just can't!" Lydia was frustrated. "You need to get to safety. I know that's what your mother would want me to do." She got up from the floor and held Melody's mother in her arms. Unlike other elves, Lydia was born powerless. The only way she could do magic is if someone shared it with her. She is what they call a snatcher.
"Where are we going?" Melody asked as Lydia walked past her.
"Websten's, it's the safest place to be." Lydia looked at Melody's sad face. "You need to be safe."
