Christmas Eve

after spending more of my days with christian then with my own family, i told christian i'd be spending my christmas eve with them.

i had already gotten him his christmas presents.

i got him a necklace with a j on it, a sweater, a pair of new headphones for his gaming, and a simple black band ring.

"jessie!", my mom yells.

i laugh looking at all the whip cream on her face.

my dad comes behind me dumping some on my head.

i gasp.

"daddy!"

my grandmas laughing too so i take some of what i have on my head and fling it at her.

"okay okay, calm down children. let me clean the kitchen", my aunt says laughing.

she lowers herself to my ear.

"someone's at the door for you".

i look at her and smile.

"i'll be right back", i say grabbing a kitchen towel and running towards the door.

-

i open it and close it behind me.

"sorry, i didn't hear the bell", i say taking off the whip cream from my hair.

"jess..", i hear.

my smile leaves my face.

christian looks so serious, almost sad?

"what's wrong?"

he shoves his hands in his pockets.

"you can't keep doing this."

i look at him confused.

"i'm sorry? what exactly am i doing?"

i hear him sigh.

i really was genuinely confused.

as far as i knew, him and i were fine.

"daniel told me you guys hung out earlier".

i shake my head instantly.

"christian, no. i didn't. i've been here all day", i say.

he looks down.

did he not believe me?

"you know i thought this would be so much easier", he starts. "you and i".

i don't speak.

"after i found out who you were i still went for it because i felt a connection to you at the airport..."

"i felt that too, i-",

he shakes his head.

"but what i didn't know was how hard it would be. you guys dated for a long time. how can i compete with that?", he continues.

my eyes brim with tears.

"you're not supposed to", i say slowly.

he doesn't say anything.

"nothing is going on between him and i. we ended a long time ago. you are different, christian. in so many ways. and i-"

he cuts me off, again.

"this isn't what i signed up for", he says finally.

my heart sinks.

i feel a tear start down my face.
