Cupcakes

Gabrielle and I walk down the hallway, a purple box in her hand that has a big smiley face on the front. I look up and look at her face, her eyes are wide open, her smile staying on her face. You can tell in the manner of her walking that she is excited, and incredibly happy.

We reach her apartment and enter, setting our coats on the hanger and walking to the living room. Gabrielle places the box on the table and takes out each cupcake carefully, placing them on the table. "Can you grab some milk for us?" She asks me, turning back and giving me a soft smile. I nod and head towards the kitchen.

I open the fridge and grab the gallon, pulling it out and placing it on the counter. I hear footsteps behind me, going farther away, telling me that Gabrielle must be looking for Richard in their room. I grab three cups from the cabinets and place them on the counter, pouring milk in each cup slowly.

"Why would you awake me in the middle of my nap? It felt so amazing.." I turn around, watching Richard walking down the short hall, his right hand connected with Gabrielles left. His left hand rubbing his eyes. Gabrielle nudges him, causing him to show his dazed smile, staring into her eyes. She giggles and rolls her eyes playfully, but then points towards me.

"Oh hey Daisy, didn't see you there." He says after he turns towards me, his eyelids going up and down. He yawns and gives a little stretch before he gives a hug to Gabrielle.

"We have some news for you!" She says as he walks towards the couch. "Yes, I can see that now.." He says as he makes eye contact with the cupcakes. He sits on the couch and stares back and forth between me and Gabrielle.

"Well? Don't keep me waiting!" Gabrielle chuckles and sits down next to him, cuddling him. He cuddles back into her and they lay on the couch, her arms around his torso, and his head resting on her chest. They smile at each other, and even I could tell that they were speaking the language of love with their eyes and smiles. It was beautiful to see, but it felt like a video game. It's fun seeing someone else playing, but you just can't wait until they lose, so that your turn can finally begin.

I place the three cups of milk on a short tray and grab the tray, heading towards the living room. I sit on the smaller sofa, putting the tray on the coffee table, next to the cupcakes.

"Well.. know this young girl from work, she comes in a few days a week. I started talking with her Dad, and recently him and his wife realized that they'll be needing a babysitter on Friday's for their daughter. So I told him about you and he was ecstatic about it, tomorrow I'm going to give him your number so that you two can be in contact."

Before I can even blink I feel arms wrap around me, quite tightly. I finally get my breathing to balance and I look over Richards shoulder, seeing Gabrielle. She has her hands clasped together, her eyes are misty. She is looking at the back of Richard's head. I could see the look in her eyes. How happy she was that someone who she loved deeply was so happy.

"Thank you so much Daisy! You don't know how much I appreciate it!" He says after finally pulling back. He grabs my head and gives me several kisses on my forehead. I breathe in and out as I feel my head being pushed back and forth by the force of his hand. It was annoying. My head was beginning to throb. I know he was happy and that he was thanking me for doing what I had done, but a simple thank you would suffice. I don't need to be given a concussion to have a point proven to me.

"I'd better take my cupcake to go, I've got to make sure I'm up on time for tomorrow." I say, breaking the news after a few minutes. Richard comes up to me, a quick hug, a quick kiss on the forehead as a goodbye. He heads towards the restroom, leaving me and Gabrielle alone.

"So! How has it gone with your lucky guy?" She asks, playfulness running along her eyebrows, her eyes holding excitement. She begins wrapping the bottom of my cupcake with a napkin, carefully putting it inside the box as she looks at me.

"Oh..it's going well! Me and him talked today..and wow." I say, looking up, letting myself smile freely in front of her.

"When? While work?" I quickly make eye contact with her. Her eyebrows have dropped, her eyes no longer reading excitement. She's curious.

"Yes..but only quickly." I respond, darting my eyes away. I was an okay liar, but when it came to Leonardo, I couldn't control any emotion that made its way out of my body.

"Daisy. Look at me." I continue looking at the picture on the table, its Gabrielle and her Dad at Disneyland a few years back. I know she knows that we both know that she knows me best. If anybody were to read me like a book and accurately describe every chapter, every sentence, every word, it would be her.

"What?" I connect my eyes with her, making sure my voice sounds extra harsh. She flinches back ever so slightly, blinking twice, but then her eyebrows cave in, she looks stubborn.

"The man that you talked to today about Richard..is he the man that's been on your mind? Is he the married man you've been thinking about?" Her voice shushed, obviously trying not to let Richard hear.

"Of course not. Why would I be interested in a married man?" I ask, testing her.

"Daisy. You don't talk to many people. At all. Why are you suddenly talking to this man and his daughter?" She fires back.

"It just happened! I met the daughter on accident, the dad came and apologized and it moved on from there!" I yell. I cover my hand with my mouth, I was shocked. I never meant to yell at her, but I couldn't control it.

"Daisy, this is a dangerous game you're playing. And I know you don't want to talk-"

"You're right! I don't want to talk about it! It has nothing to do with you! We've been friends for years, and I always appreciated how you never asked questions, never went snooping! But here you are, accusing me of such a disgusting thing and asking me questions on something we both know I don't want to discuss!" I yell again, standing up this time, heading towards the hanger and grabbing my coat, putting it on.

"I know! And you're right! You deserve your privacy! But I'm trying to look out for you! You've never experienced love like this! You've experienced love from your family, from me and Richard, but not like this! I don't want you to get hurt!" She yells back, her eyes tearing up once again.

"What? So you're saying I'm weak? That if my heart gets broken I won't be able to take it?"

"You know that's not what I meant! I meant-"

"No! I don't want to hear it. Leave me alone, I'm leaving. And wipe your fucking tears, stop crying over useless arguments." I leave, but not before hearing her gasp at my last statement. I could hear her soft cries as I stood right outside her front door, wondering what I had just done.
