Cookies

The car stops right in front of my parents house. Gabrielle unbuckles her seatbelt with a very excited look on her face. She loved my parents. Well, I'm happy someone did. Richard smiled along with her, he found them quite enjoyable as well. They both exit the car, but I stay behind for a few seconds. I sigh, closing my eyes, convincing myself that I can sit through these next miserable hours.

I exit the car and slam the door behind me. I stuff my hands into the pockets of my green jacket. The three of us head up the steps, Gabrielle holding a basket full of ingredients for cookies. Richard knocks on the front door and my Dad's face lights up. Seeing that almost made my soul produce a sort of soft, lovey-dovey feeling, but it evaporated before it could even happen.

"Hey Dad." I say, putting on Smile Number 5. I give him a hug, wrapping my arms around his neck. He gives me a soft kiss on my forehead then hurries to greet Gabrielle and Richard.

"Chris!" Gabrielle says as she hugs him and they smile for a few seconds. He moves onto Richard, pulling him into a hug. I stared from behind Gabrielle. I could see the light that flared in my Dad's eyes as hugged Gabrielle and Richard. At times I wondered if he liked them better just because their lives we're planned out, they had an apartment together, they were in love. But I could never accuse him of it, I'd be told how ridiculous I was being.

We head inside, settling in living room. After greeting my mother as well, we sit down and talk about our god-awful boring lives. I could feel the other voices in my head begin to discuss random subjects out of boredom. After about an hour of almost falling asleep, we head into the kitchen to start baking the cookies.

Gabrielle and my Dad begin discussing the latest baseball scores as they mix the cookie dough. Richard and my Mom discuss his job as they cut the cookies into stars. I stand in the back, once again, watching them closely. They looked more like a family together than when I stood next to my parents. Although I suppose it's my fault. I never tried to connect with them, I never showed emotion around them, what was shown was a facade. But I couldn't help it. Ever since I was younger, I knew I could never be on their level, never relate to them, never be like them.

"Yes, I'm afraid the kid I was babysitting is getting too old. I need to find a new kid soon, but I'm not too worried." My head snapped to Richards side. He had been with that kid for a year, it would be tough to get back on the radar.

"It's okay, you'll find a new kid soon, we'll be okay." Gabrielle says as she pulls him closer, pressing their foreheads together and smiling. I felt like gagging.

"How adorable." My mom whispers in my ear, staring at the lovebirds. I'm about to roll my eyes but I catch myself just in time. I nod and give a soft smile. We continue working on the cookies and the kitchen begins to smell good, and feel warm. The same way I feel when I stare into Leonardo's eyes. I let a small smile release itself, feeling a little bit of happiness thinking about him.

"My Daisy, you seem in a dazed state, are you okay?" My Mom says from the couch, beside my Dad.

"Oh, I...Um..." I find myself stuttering over the words, the blush rising to my cheeks, my eyes darting everywhere in the room except my Mom's eyes. Suddenly Gabrielle lets out a soft giggle and I turn my head quickly. Richard is smiling along with her, giving me a look. They know who I was thinking about.

"She's thinking about someone. Dare I say.. a man." Gabrielle says giggling again, her and Richard giving me playful eyes again.

"A man? Have you met someone?" My Dad asks, staring at me as if I were an unsolved puzzle.

"Well..I did meet..someone." I respond, looking down, beginning to play with my sleeve.

"That's great! Is he a good man?" My Mom asks, looking excited. I bite my lip as I continue playing with my sleeve. What was I supposed to tell my parents?

"Actually no, he's a married man, and he has a daughter, and he's a cheater!"

I push that thought out of my head and give a slight nod to my parents. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have told my family about him. Like ever, but of course Gabrielle and Richard just had to ruin it.

"That's great news! We can't wait to meet him!" My Dad said, holding my Mom's hand, both of them looking happy for me. Their eyes reading "Fucking finally you've found someone, now you can accomplish something."

"We can't wait to meet him either, Gabrielle wants me to make sure he's good enough for her." Richard says, smiling and giving Gabrielle a quick kiss on her cheek.

Gabrielle giggles, a slight blush sitting on her cheeks. "Of course, only the best man is fit for my best friend." She responds, smiling at me. I look at her with a look of gratitude. She cared, and she was sweet, even if she did tell my parents about Leonardo.
