I hum while dusting off the shelf, feeling better than I have in weeks. I feel the birds flying around me, hearing them chirp to themselves, feeling like I'm a princess in a Disney movie. It's what I deserve anyways. I deserve to feel like the most gorgeous woman in the town, feel like every man wants me but I only have my eyes set on one lucky man.
"Daisy."
I drop the duster and gasp in surprise, the imaginary birds surrounding me suddenly fleeing and hiding themselves within the crooks between the books. "He-Hello Leonardo, sorry I was daydreaming." I respond as I bend down to pick the duster back up, placing it in the little cleaning basket.
"It's alright, I just came to thank you, me and Bella finally found someone for Melanie. Richard seems likes the perfect match. Bella sends her thanks as well." He says, a charming but genuine smile coming onto his face.
"Oh!" I say quickly, my face flushing more and more as the seconds pass. "That's such great news, Richard is great with kids. I'm so happy you two were able to land him!" I make sure the excitement in my voice is obvious, showing to him that I "care".
"Yeah.." He says, him shifting around a little bit, putting his hands in his pockets. I could feel it too, the awkward yet curious tension, and I know he was afraid to look the tension in the eye, his eyes darted everywhere.
"Yes, I'm an incredibly helpful person." I respond, chuckling a little bit, trying to ease the tension by joking. I'm not the type to joke, but at least I tried. He meets my eyes and chuckles along with me, and I feel my heart explode with glitter.
"Well, I guess I should get going, Melanie gets off from school in about 30." He responds and takes his hands out from his pockets. He puts his right hand in front of me, expecting a goodbye hand shake. I blink and look down, grabbing his hand with my left and shaking back. I walk a little closer to him and I look up, eyes wide and my smile bright.
I see it. I see how my eyes pull him in, his eyes not leaving mine as he gets closer by a step, gripping the hand shake. "Again..I thank you." He says, the words leaving his mouth slowly. We're so close that I could feel the tips of my shoes touching the tips of his. If I were to take one step closer, my chest would be touching his. We don't move, but my head is directly under his, up and ready for anything, as his is lowered down, lust swirling around his eyes. I could read the desire on his face.
Suddenly a harsh sound of something hitting the floor erupts and me and Leonardo automatically let go and I back away, his eyes darting everywhere besides my eyes, as I turn around quickly. At the end of the aisle I see Gabrielle standing there, three books next to her shiny heels, a black skirt on, a long sleeve sweater with oranges on them. Her hair pulled back by two big orange pins.
"I'm-I'm incredibly sorry! I didn't mean to interrupt you two, I- I was just..um..just looking for something-" She shutters as she bends down, picking up her books and standing back up, cheeks flushed and eyes wide.
I look back at Leonardo, expecting to see hatred or frustration due to the fact that we were caught in a somewhat intimate position. But instead I see him watching Gabrielle, and watching her closely, as if he were examining her. I feel little me running through my stomach, grabbing a big bucket labeled "Jealousy" and pouring the contents of the bucket into my stomach, the liquid bubbling and moving around rapidly.
I turn back around to Gabrielle, but she didn't even notice. Her eyes are still darting around, her fingers playing with the pages in the closed books. "Gabrielle, it's okay, don't worry about it. Leonardo was just thanking me for Richard, and he was wishing me goodbye."
"Oh! Yes, right. My fiancé is amazing." She responds, her eyes filled with love and her lips forming a smile.
"So you're Gabrielle? I never got to meet you, Richard said you were busy when I went to your place to meet him." Leonardo responds, walking closer, confidence in his walk. Him leaving me behind as if I was just a toy. They quickly shake each others hands then she lets go, her left hand returning back to the position under the novels.
"Anyways, I do have to get going now, but I'm confident Melanie and Richard will be the perfect match. Goodbye ladies." He says, a smirk on his face, staring at Gabrielle a second longer than he should, then walking away. I look back at her, but once again, I don't believe she noticed, she never notices the small details, unless it's about Richard.
"I'm so happy Richard got a new kid to take care of!" I say, a small smile on my face, trying to push the awkwardness out the window and slam the window.
"Yes! Me too." She says quickly. "Well, I've got to go get these to the Mystery section. I'll see you around." She says, her eyes meeting mine. She gives me a smile, but not a regular one. It seems to be a tight smile, and her eyes. Her eyes are what shocks me the most, I read disappointment in them. She walks away and I rush down the aisle, looking out of it as she walks and walks. I think about her leaving quickly, the tight smile, her saying "I'll see you around" as if I were a new friend, as if I were a stranger she met on the street and talked to me for a minute or two. And the disappointment running along her eyes, that was the one that made me blink several times, refusing to let my eyes water.
