Johnny opened a can of beer and took a sip, before addressing his students. It was 7 am in the morning and Maddie felt sluggish. After her date with Eli the night before, she was tired out.
"You've trained hard. You've gotten stronger, tougher, faster. You've done your best. You're ready for this tournament, am I right?" Johnny questioned.
"Yes, sensei!" they all shouted.
"Wrong!" he threw the beer can and it landed right in front of Maddie, splashing her with some. She shook her arms, disgusted.
"Your best ain't shit. If you wanna win the All Valley Under-18 Karate Tournament, you gotta give me better than your best. Which is why from now on, you're gonna get my worst. Do you understand?" Johnny asked.
"Yes, sensei." they all shouted back. Maddie looked to her left towards Miguel and Hawk. They looked determined and ready which helped her get into the zone.
"Are you losers?" Johnny shouted.
"No, sensei." everyone yelled.
"Are you nerds?" he called out.
"No, sensei." they cried out.
"Are you sure?" he questioned, again.
"No, sensei." everyone but Maddie said. She raised an eyebrow and stayed quiet, wondering what Johnny was playing at.
Johnny slapped his hands to his face.
Training then started at an alarmingly difficult pace. Maddie was excited though. This is what she had been waiting for. To really get into shape.
**cue training montage**
"Move those feet! Go! Go! Go!" Johnny shouted at Maddie, Miguel, and Hawk. Maddie was absolutely excelling at the workout, hopping over each of the barrels with ease, with Miguel and Hawk right behind her.
"Your enemies are all around you. Destroy them!" Johnny instructed. Everyone had a pipe in hand and used them as bats to smash car windows.
Maddie and Hawk smashed windows side by side, smirking at one another while doing so.
"Let's go, squirt. Good job, buddy. Go!" Johnny encouraged the other boys behind them doing the wheels next.
Miguel, Aisha, Maddie, and Hawk all stood in front of a dumpster filled with sharp scraps below, having to walk across a beam laid out in the middle. Miguel went first.
"Attaboy! Come on, princess. Let's go. Move that ass." he kept encouraging, with Miguel crossing.
"There's nothing to fear but fear itself." Johnny said as Hawk stepping up, grabbing Maddie and giving her a kiss, before taking his turn.
Aisha whistled at them and Maddie just shoved her lightly, a blush on her face. Hawk couldn't help the smirk on his face as he continued crossing.
"That, and falling in sharp metal and broken glass, so don't do that!" Johnny shouted at Hawk, who slipped slightly at that, causing Maddie to wince. She sighed, relieved that he was ok.
