"Cyberbullying is no laughing matter. Sending a cruel message to someone online can be just as hurtful as saying it to their face."
"No, you don't understand. My son is getting bullied everyday."
"I'm not gonna name names, but the other day a mother called me up because her son was crying after some kids online made fun of his facial deformity."
No one was listening until that line was brought up.
"Yeah, they call him names. Freak, loser, shit-lip. It-It's not right. You have to do something about this."
"It's the kid right there." One of them pointed to Eli.
"It's the kid with the weird lip." another whispered.
"You're gonna make an announcement?" Eli's mom gave him an encouraging look.
Maddie glared in their directions, causing them all to shut up and look away. She only rolled her eyes at them before she went back to eating her chicken sandwich.
"Don't have them make an announcement" Eli begged. Eli's mom waved at him to give it a chance.
"But today, our goal here is to make this school a safe space for all students." the counselor explained.
"Just, please keep his name out of it. I don't want him to be embarrassed. I'm sure that this will nip in the butt." Eli's mom replied before hanging up, feeling accomplished.
"Do you realize what you've done?" Eli questioned, tear marks on his face.
"The school needed to know that this behavior should not be tolerated." Eli's mother defended.
"Don't you get it? They're never gonna stop making fun of me because I'm a loser." Eli cried.
"That's not true." his mom tried to reason.
"Wake up mom!" Eli exclaimed, hitting the table.
"I'm a freak! I'm never gonna have any other friends besides Demetri. I'm never gonna get a girlfriend. I'm never going to be anything other than a kid with the weird lip!" Eli shouted.
As he started to storm away to his room, the next words his mom spoke made him freeze.
"What about Maddie?" she questioned.
"She could never love someone like me." was all he said before continuing. He slammed the door to his room shut, before hopping and his bed and continuing to cry.
"You know, if you're sick of getting bullied, my karate dojo's looking for recruits." Miguel offered Eli.
This captured Maddie's attention. She wondered if she should get back into an actual dojo instead of just training herself at home.
