Something's wrong, Sans thinks to himself. Something's very wrong.
"Hey Sans, you alright?" Travis Stoll asks, waving a hand in front of the skeleton's face.
Sans blinks a few times before shaking his head with a "no, it's nothing" and grabbing his ketchup bottle, which one of the Hermes kids had smuggled into the camp.
"I've fulfilled my part of the deal," Travis says, outstretching a hand. "Now it's time you fulfill yours."
"yes, okay, here you go," Sans says, handing Travis a tiny gaster blaster skull before teleporting away and to the forest where he had left the demigods to train.
"i hope i don't regret giving travis that blaster," Sans mutters to himself, popping his bottle of ketchup open and taking a long sip out of it and teleporting to the forest where he left them. "where're maya and the other kiddos? why is it so quiet? they'd better not be playing a prank on me."
Sans starts walking into the forest, a sensing of concern growing in his soul at the absence of magic in the air. Maybe Maya had called in for a break? Annabeth's magic in particular did require lots of stamina.
There's no way he could've been waiting for Sans to disappear, right? Annabeth's blast of magic weren't exactly subtle.
Sans continues walking on into the forest, his senses on high alert for even the smallest ping of magic.
The walk turns into a small jog when he picks up on nothing.
He keeps running on, deeper and deeper into the forest, calling out Maya's name.
After a few seconds of running, he finally picks up on a bit of magic.
But, something's wrong with this. It felt structured, like it was put there.
Sans stops. He brings his hand up to the air in front of him.
His hand comes in contact with a light blue, hexagonal grid. A magical barrier.
He knew what this specific barrier was, too. He had personally designed this off of already-existing design plans. It was so flawed before, so flawed that he felt the need to refine it. This was not the refined version he had built before.
"how the hell did somebody get their hands on this?" Sans asks himself. "i burnt the old design plans a long time ago.
"unless..."
Sans activates his magic, summoning two small gaster blasters and firing it at the barrier, easily punching a hole through it.
He walks into the forest and immediately picks up on subtle auras of soul traits from the demigods he left in the forest, including an extra large aura of kindness, definitely Maya's.
And a much, much darker aura.
A familiar darker aura.
Sans curses and starts in the direction of the auras.
-----
"How is he finding us through all this dense forestry?!" Annabeth shouts, dashing through another bush.
"Our souls!" Maya shouts back. "He doesn't need to see us if he can simply track the give-off of magic from our souls!"
Will nocks another arrow into his bow and lets it fly. The arrow collides with another skeletal hand that appears from a tree.
"Well, how do we get away from him then?!" Annabeth asks.
"We just have to leave the forest!" Maya says. "Then we can call for help!"
