Every respectable demigod knew how Mount Olympus looked like. Either in person or in their dreams. Maya had been their before multiple times to receive Quests before her fall into the Underground.
It was supposed to be always sunny since the home of the Gods was above the clouds. The gods should all be seated on their immaculate thrones, glowering down at whoever was unfortunate enough to be summoned by then.
However, now, the clouds covered the supposedly always-sunny sky. The pillars were cracked and collapsed. The thrones were damaged and the bonfire at the center of the throne room, for once, was put out. The gods were nowhere to be found.
Instead, sitting on the large throne in the center of the ring of eleven other thrones, was a small brown-haired child of undistinguishable gender. They were wearing a light green, yellow-stripped sweater and brown cargo pants. Their cheeks were rosy, but the smile on their face was nothing less than sadistic.
They were fiddling with a knife in their hands, the blade of it glowing a blood red.
The sight of the child made shivers run down Maya's spine.
The child perfectly balances the tip of their knife onto their finger, the sharp blade of it somehow not breaking through the skin and drawing out any blood.
"Take a look around you," the child says, giggling. "This is the very near future of the gods you humans revered so much. Who's smart idea was it to put a bunch of children in charge of the world in the first place? Never mind that. This is a warning to you Kindness, when the gods fall, it'll be up to you whether what comes in the end will benefit or harm you."
Maya tries to say something, but realizes that she can't move her lips or any other parts of her body.
"Just a simple cooperation is all I ask, Kindness," the child says, holding out their other hand as they lean into one of the armrests on Zeus's throne.
In the palm of their hand, an upside-down, glowing white soul appears. Though it looked just like a normal monster soul, the beat of it was all too familiar to Maya.
She would hear it every time she would rest her head against Sans's ribcage.
"If you play nicely, maybe, just maybe, I'll leave the trashbag alone," the child says, carelessly tossing their knife into the air and catching it. "Then you and he can go live in a secluded valley out in the middle of nowhere for the rest of your worthless lives! Boring, but hey, you both get to live. Well, if not..."
The child's eyes suddenly glow red as the small hand with the soul in it balls into a fist, crumbling the soul. Maya would've screamed if it weren't for whatever restraints that were keeping her in place.
"Not so emotional now, Kindness," the child says, letting the tiny soul fragments fall to the ground. "This is a dream after all, so everything you see here hasn't really happened yet, but I'm sure you get the warning regardless.
"I hope you make the right choice, partner."
With that, Maya wakes up, sitting up suddenly on her bunk in the Demeter cabin and breathing very hard.
Sunlight was streaming out from the window right beside her bunk. The alarm clock sitting on the bedtable right in front of her bed read 8:01 in large, red digital characters. It was way past time for breakfast.
Maya didn't really have the motivation to go to breakfast though. The dream she just recently had startled her.
She needed to tell Annabeth, Will, and the others about it. But first...
