Zoe opened her eyes to find everyone in the glade just waking up as well. She looked out the door of the homestead to see the light creeping across the field, illuminating everything.
She hopped off of her hammock, and looked over to see Chuck, drooling, still fast asleep. Zoe chuckled and walked over shaking him gently.
"Chuck, hey Chuck, it's time to get up."
Nothing happened. Zoe shook him a little harder.
"Chuck get up."
The small boy sat straight up in his hammock looking around for the cause of him being woken up. He stopped and smiled when he saw her, taking a moment to wipe the drool from his face.
"Hey Zoe! Have fun last night?"
The events of the previous night came rushing back, sadness, disappointment, joy, and a massive headache.
"Oh god" Zoe said, pressing a hand to her temple
Chuck laughed "Gally gave you waaaay too much to drink last night. The only person here as small as you is me, and they won't let me drink any of it."
Zoe smiled at the thought of the boys protecting Chuck and not letting him have the alcohol. As she replayed last nights events in her head, trying to figure out when exactly she'd become so drunk, Alby came up behind her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Big day greenie, you ready to try some jobs?"
"Yeah, I'm ready, what am I starting with?"
"You'll be starting with Winston in the bloodhouse, and then you'll help the baggers with whatever you've done with the slicers."
She looked at him with mild disdain, but didn't say anything, waiting for him to continue.
"Then you'll get to have lunch, and after lunch you'll work with the track-hoes and Frypan, helping him cook dinner for everyone. Tomorrow you'll try to help the builders, and then you'll aid the medjacks after tomorrow's lunch."
"Alright, sounds good."
"If you aren't good at any of those, you'll be a slopper."
Zoe cringed at the thought, but stopped herself short when she realized she was still next to Chuck, who happened to be a slopper.
"What about being a runner."
"What?"
"You mentioned all the jobs except runner."
" I don't think that's a very good idea Zoe, I mean-"
"I can handle it, at least let me try, you never know what I could be capable of."
Alby raised an eyebrow and sighed "I suppose you're right, you did beat Gally last night after all."
"Exactly"
"I'll let you try being a runner, but not until you've tried everything else first."
"Thanks Alby, I appreciate it"
"No problem greenie, now get to the bloodhouse, and have fun."
Although he said it in a serious tone, Alby must've been joking, due to the fact that the bloodhouse was for slaughtering animals.
"Oh, Zoe, I know you've already been warned, but stay away from Kyle, we let him out of the slammer this morning and he's still pissed. He and Kevin are slicers, so just-" Alby stopped for a minute, probably trying to decide the best way to word his next sentence. "Just watch your back in there, we can't have any accidents."
