Chapter 19 - Memories

Memories

"Hurry!" Zoe shouted as she struggled to hold Gally's arms down.

They hadn't had enough time to tie him to the cot, and now everybody was frantic.

"Are we sure about this?"

"Do it!"

"It could kill him!"

"Just do it already!"

Fifteen minutes earlier

"He stopped fighting."

"Is he asleep?"

"Most likely some sort of coma."

Alby and the medjacks were talking in hushed whispers, discussing Gally's condition.

"So what do we do about the sting?"

"Is that what we're calling it?"

"That's what it looks like."

"Do you think it was from a griever?"

"What else could it be from?"

"I hate to interrupt your little powwow, but what are we doing with this shank?" Minho said.

Clint, Jeff, and Alby all turned to look at him as he raised a question eyebrow.

"I'm thinking the same thing." Zoe added, backing up Minho. It seemed as if the three boys didn't want anyone else to know what they thought.

"I guess we just, wait and see if he wakes up."

"And if he doesn't?" This came from Newt, who was obviously getting antsy being close to what was most likely a ticking time bomb.

"If he doesn't then so be it. It happens, it's happened before and it'll happen again."

"That's really your response? You're fine with losing him?" Zoe knew there weren't easy decisions to be made, but she was dumbfounded that Alby could be so calm about losing one of his own.

"Yes, that's my response. Now, I've got other things to deal with."

Zoe tried to think. There had to be something they could.

"Alby!" She called, as he had already left the room.

He re-entered a moment later, looking exasperated.

"Yes?"

"This is something you've never seen before right?"

"Correct."

"I think I see where you're going with this gem." Newt chimed in, placing a hand on the small of her back.

"So we need to think of a solution you've never used before."

"Excuse me?"

"You're thinking of treating something new with something old. That's obviously not gonna work. You need something new."

Alby pondered for a moment. It seemed as if he was going to be against her idea, most likely because she was challenging him, but overall he was a good leader. And good leaders do what's best for their people.
