Failure

And he suddenly knew that if she killed herself, he would die. Maybe not immediately, maybe not with the same blinding rush of pain, but it would happen. You couldn't live for very long without a heart.
- Jodi Picoult

Newt woke to a hand gripping his, but the hold was loosening by the second, and a head started to droop towards the cot.

He was in an unimaginable amount of pain. Every bone in his body ached, but his leg hurt the most. And it took him only a second to realize that he'd failed. Failed at leaving, failed at taking the easy way out. He couldn't even accomplish a simple thing like that.

But his thoughts were tugged back to the present as the hand slipped from his completely.

Newt saw the smile on her face, her inky black eyes, her beautiful pain, and a look of pure peace he'd experienced once before.

Her eyes were a colour reminiscent of the cloak of death himself, and as she reached out to take his bony skeletal hand, Newt reached out, grabbing her hand instead.

He realized what was happening, after everything, he couldn't lose her. Not now, not ever.

"Zoe."

His voice was low and gravelly, and only just above a whisper. She looked up only enough to meet his eyes, and tears slid down her cheeks.

Newts eyes broke away from hers, surveying the room.

And that's when he spotted the almost empty bottle lying next to him on the cot.

Newt felt his stomach drop, and he knew if he didn't do something soon, he'd lose her forever.

"No. No, no. Zoe, don't leave, stay with me."

He pushed himself up onto his elbows, grimacing and grinding his teeth at the amount of pain shooting through his entire body, especially his leg. Newt knew he couldn't save her, not alone at least, not in his condition.

"No, you can't go, I'm gonna get help. For you."

Zoe watched as he put the pieces together, and saw the full picture of the situation. She watched the panic flood his face, and she heard his voice tremble. She felt bad, for doing something like this to him, but she was in so much pain, and she just wanted it to end.

"Hey, listen to me. You're worth so much, you don't have to leave. You make everybody's world so much brighter. You're the sunshine, my sunshine. You have to stay, if not for me then for yourself. Please."

Newt hands trembled as he gripped Zoe's tighter, willing her to stay awake.

"Stay with me. Stay."

The boy turned away from her so he was facing the door to the medjack hut.

"MINHO."

She cringed at his sudden yelling, she didn't like all the noise disrupting her newfound peace. Zoe also didn't want Minho to see her like this. She was broken, and she wasn't sure she wanted anyone to truly see the depth of it.

"MINHO."

Newt was frantic, he couldn't get out of this stupid cot, and Zoe was slipping through his fingers like sand.

"Don't you die on me. I won't have that."

Newt grabbed the sides of her face and forced Zoe to look up at him. He looked into her eyes, trying to get her to understand the depth of his feeling for her, and the depth of his words.
