Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Minho had been deep in thought ever since he and Thomas followed Newt out of the maze, dragging Kyle to the slammer.
At first, he thought about how cruel the world was, and how he hated this maze more than any other thing that existed, except for Kyle.
Then he thought about the baggers, and whether or not they'd removed Zoe from the field, and if they had, had they been careful?
Then he thought about how the glade could possibly get past such a devastating blow to everyone's spirit.
But the thing he thought about the most was on his mind while he was running in the maze.
Always expect the unexpected.
Minho never expected a glader to harm another that bad, especially without being stung. He'd never expected to hear Newt threaten someone the way he had. He never expected to hear those words come out of Gally's mouth.
They kept ringing in his ears.
"Newt, Zoe's alive."
She was one tough cookie, and if anyone could survive something like that, it was Zoe.
He expected horrific things to happen in the glade, the maze. They'd happened before, there were grievers, and he'd had to watch a banishing or two, not to mention the changing.
But the thing Minho never expected, something he never thought he'd come across in a billion and one years, something so horrific and nauseating that he'd never even stopped to consider, or think about, or even conjure up the slightest image of, was seeing Newt, his best friend in the entire world, laying in a pool of his own blood on the dirty floor of the maze.
———
Minho had gotten up from his seat just as quickly as Newt had when he heard the news of Zoe's survival, but judging by the look on his blonde friend's face, he should wait until Newt had some time alone with Zoe.
Minho saw the way Newt looked at Zoe. When he looked at her, something extra flashed behind his warm brown eyes, subconscious recognition maybe? Or perhaps pure fascination? Absolute infatuation? Love? Whatever it was, Minho saw it in Newt when the tall boy looked at Zoe, and only when he looked at her.
Thomas must've know too, because he gently placed a hand on Minho's arm, guiding him back into his seat as Newt sprinted out of the kitchens.
Minho turned to Thomas, a shocked expression plastered over his features.
"She alive."
"I can't belie- I mean- how?!"
"I don't know man."
"Did you see Newt?"
"Yeah dude, he doesn't look too good."
"I always knew there was something there. Y'know, between the two of them, at least on Newt's side."
The two boys' conversation was over, after only a few words, but that was ok, because there was nothing else that needed to be said.
