It was March of 2013. Particularly cold this month. My FBI boss was going to be calling me today to ask about my decision on the Chicago job. Of course I wanted it; I love learning and gaining new experiences. But Chicago?! The furthest I'd been from New York, was CT during college. So I was nervous as hell.
He had sent me an email after he called, saying that since I was nearly done my graduate program (I graduate in May), and would take my certification exam to officially became a M.S. of Psychology, in June, I would be able to wait until next year to start there (2014). Just in time for winter in Chicago.. lovely.
I was at work when my phone rang, I forgot to put it on vibrate so everyone heard my ringtone until I picked it up. It was the theme to 'Jaws'. "FBI boss," I chucked as I walked into the hallway. I heard Amanda and Nick cackling behind me. I thought to myself, "my number one choice of doctoral program is through Northwestern.. this could be good.."
"Hello sir!" I chipped when I answered his call.
"Hello Ms. Callahan! How are you?"
"I'm well! How are you sir?"
"Fine! I'm calling about the Chicago contract. I trust you got my email?" He asked.
"Yes sir I did. Thanks for that.. it'll be much less stressful if I can just focus on my exams and certifications. So.. I'm going to take it.."
"Oh wonderful! I'll let them know! They'll want you there as soon as you can after the new year!" He exclaimed.
"Understood sir! But I want to make it clear that I'm still contracted by SVU as well, I don't want to leave here. I'll be able to do both, especially if one becomes my permanent position. I can help on a as-needed basis then.."
"Great, I'll email with details and pay! And of course! You're still be employed by the FBI, you'll just continue to be an independent contractor of sorts to everyone. I won't pull you from SVU permanently.. you're too helpful to them. Thank you Ms. Callahan."
"Sounds great sir, thank you!" I was happy, but also sad. Manhattan is my home, SVU is my place. Thank God I didn't have to give it up.
Later that day, I was eating my lunch in the break room when Nick walked in. "What'd the boss man have to say?" He smiled as he sat down at my table.
"Not much.. just asked if I was taking the other contract job. I told him 'yes'..." I paused and waited for a reaction.
"That's great!" He stood up.
"Yep! I made it clear that I'll still be contracted by you guys too though! Can't take SVU away from me!" I winked with a chuckle. He looked almost.. relieved. "Well I say we celebrate! Night cap tonight?" He said while getting chips out of the vending machine.
"Ha, a night cap invite without a dinner? Rude! I should smack you!" I laughed. He turned around and leaned on the table, his forearm muscles bulged from his weight, my heart skipped a beat.
"You wouldn't dare.. dinner?" He whispered with a smirk on his face. I just shook my head 'yes' and he walked away, leaving me to eat my tuna salad in peace. Minutes later, my phone *pinged* with a text from Nick, 'wear that dress I like.. if you please. Pick you up at 7:00.' I nearly had a heart attack as I replied with a thumbs up.
The dress he liked was my tight black one with red lace sleeves, that ended at my elbows. I liked it too.
I wore my red heels, nude thigh-high nylons, and red coat as well. Red is his favorite color.
