tw: suicidal ideation.
My head was screaming, last night's sleep was horrible. Tossing and turning plus waking up every so often. Taylor was still asleep. I took a deep breath in.
I heard a commotion coming from outside the tent.
"Hey, Kaitlyn, you awake?" I heard Charlottes' voice echo.
"Yeah I'm up."
"Come with me to Dr. Bowings' tent, hurry."
I jumped up and crawled out of the tent. Charlotte looked panic and soon enough, that panic was effecting me.
We raced over to the medical tent and went inside. Dr. Bowing was placing a rag on Emilie's head. "Kaitlyn, this news is sudden and upsetting but I need you to take a seat before I tell you." She signaled me to sit down.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Emilie here doesn't have much longer with us, I've tried all that I could but without the proper medicine all that I've done so far was seemingly pointless."
I wanted to vomit. This was the worst news yet. I grabbed Emilie's hand, it was ice cold. Her fingers started to twitch as she gained consciousness. My eyes widened.
"Emilie?" I gently grabbed her shoulders.
"Kaity? What's going on?" She asked, weakly.
"Don't worry about it right now. It'll be okay." I could feel my eyes start to warm up as tears formed. I heard the tent entrance move as Taylor walked in.
"Who is that?" Emilie asked.
"That's Sissys' old friend Taylor."
Taylor sat down on the other side, with distinct worry on her face.
"Taylor, this is Emilie, my younger sister." I said, voice cracking.
Taylor looked concerned as she leaned in.
"Hey Emilie, I'm Taylor, I used to be best friends with your sister when I was about your age." She smiled.
"Hello." Emilie smiled back.
"Kaity, I don't feel good." Those words felt like a dagger.
"I know you don't, but it'll be okay, I promise, you'll see mommy and daddy soon."
"I will?"
"You will."
"Hey Emilie." Taylor leaned in again. "You got super lucky to have such an amazing and caring sister. You're super loved."
Emilie smiled as she Began coughing.
Dr. Bowing held her head up and Emilie Began to vomit.
"Not much longer at all." The Doctor Mumbled.
"Taylor, let's leave these two sisters alone for a few minutes. Kaitlyn, call me back when it's over." She patted my back before inviting herself and Taylor outside.
"Kaity I'm scared." She whined.
"I know you are, but don't worry at all." I brushed my fingers through her hair.
"You remember the bird we saw after Uncle David's Funeral? The red cardinal?"
She nodded yes.
"Well that was uncle david. He's still here, mommy and daddy are birds too, you'll be one soon as well. When you are a bird you will be able to fly, plus there's unlimited amounts of candy."
"Ice cream?"
"Yes, endless amounts."
Tears began to pour.
"Kaity, why are you sad?"
"I'm not sad, I'm happy for you."
"Are you coming too?"
"It's not my turn yet, but I'll be there soon."
"But I'll miss you, mommy and daddy will miss you."
"I know, I'll miss you all too."
"Kaity, why do I feel like this?" She started having trouble keeping her eyes awake.
"Shh, let's just lay here together..."
I lightly placed my head on her chest and covered my mouth. I listened to her heart beat in rhythm. I listened all the way until the final beat. I leaned up. She wasn't breathing anymore.
I gritted my teeth and I wanted to scream, but I couldn't. I got up and walked outside. Taylor was sitting on the ground as Dr. Bowing was leaned against a tree. She noticed me and gave a weak smile as she walked towards me.
"I think you should go lay down for a bit."
"It's not worth it, nothing's worth it." My emotions got the best of me.
"I mean my whole family is dead, shouldn't I be dead too? I should be dead, why am I not dead." I was spewing words from my mouth.
"Hey calm down, I'll get you Some water." She went inside the tent and came out with a water bottle.
"The fact you aren't dead means that you are supposed to be here, you are apart of the story."
I disagreed. "No I don't want to be here anymore, I can't do it without my family."
"You need to do this for your family. Keep the bloodline going. No one knows what's going on here just exactly or even why Mr. O'neil had a futuristic vision that society would collapse, but we keep going, if there's a will there's a way, you just need to do some thinking and definitely hydrate, I'll check on you soon." She rubbed my back and headed back into her tent.
Taylor got up and smiled at me.
"Let's go rest, red." She grabbed my arm, lightly, and pulled me.
On the way to the tent, Taylor stopped.
"Do you hear that?" She asked.
"What?" I responded, sniffling.
"There's singing."
She walked around the back of the and jumped, I followed.
There was a girl with black hair covering her face. She looked up and brushed the hair out of her face, exposing her heavy dark makeup.
"Heyo, sorry if I'm disturbing the peace, I'll head off." She said.
" No no, it's okay, you just scared us."
She laughed. "My name is Danica."
"Taylor."
"Kaitlyn."
"Nice, well im going head back in, nice meeting you guys, see you around." She walked off.
Me and Taylor looked and each other and shrugged.
We made it back to the tent. I laid down and started crying.
"Crying is the best thing to do right now." Taylor said.
I cried harder in response.
My headache was getting worse.
Just checking up on everyone! We are getting to the good stuff so stick around!!
