Another short chapter, but it's a sad one.
I woke up early and prepared myself to join the recovery team, but I could never prepare myself for what I might see. I brushed myself off and jogged over to the unit. Dax looked unmistakably sad, I think he already knew some bad news.
We lined up and waited for Captain to give us the orders. "Alright, this is a no fight mission but you will take weapons. On this mission you will bring home any members that were left and you will report any members that are not here with us anymore." He said as he lead us out the gate.
We arrived at the neighborhood, it was more trashed than before. My stomach turned as I observed the bodies laying on the street. We all walked off on our own. I looked at each body on the street and wrote down the name. Even though I had never had interactions with them, I was still incredibly sad.
I walked Into a house in the middle of the neighborhood. The door creaked open. the smell coming from inside the house was awful, it made my stomach turn even more than it already was. I stepped foot into the house, my footsteps creaking with each movement. I observed the house with caution and watched my surroundings like a hawk.
I spotted nothing downstairs so I decided to turn my attention towards the 2nd floor. I walked up the steps and slowly peaked around each corner. My attention was drawn towards the back backroom. I started getting anxious.
I slowly peaked into the room and my heart dropped.
"Danica?.."
I gagged.
My eyes observed my friends lifeless body, she was leaned up against the bed. One arm laid onto of it. She looked as if she was mauled, they got to her. I started screaming. It was the only emotion that could come out.
"Kaitlyn? Kaitlyn what's wrong?" I heard Dax yelling from downstairs. His foot steps ran up the stairs. I didn't want him to see his sister like this. He was staring at me at the end of the hall, panting. As soon as he saw my face, he got pale. He knew.
That night
People started dragging in the bodies. Dax was laying next to a fire, Cameron beside him. I wasn't planning on bothering them, I wanted to let them morn.
A few days later..
"Yo! You guys! Come quick!" My attention snapped as Keenan was waving for us to follow him. We All got off the logs around the fire and followed.
The trailed behind him in the woods. Upon following him, he let us too a large body of water, a lake. My eyes got wide.
"Holy-everyloving-shit, a lake!" Yelled Taylor. Despite her injured foot, she was the first to check it out.
"How far did you go off the scavenger course?" I asked.
"Far enough to find this, it's perfect, we can now take baths and get better water supplies, plus food!" He was beyond excited about the lake.
"Danica would have absolutely loved this." Dax sounded pitiful, and I wasn't going to blame him. I walked up and gave him a side hug.
They spent the rest of the day hanging out near the lake, eventually notifying O'neil.
