I can't breathe, please help me, why are you laughing? There's nothing funny about this! I seriously can't breathe!
"Kaitlyn?" I heard Taylor's voice ask from behind me.
I turned my neck so I could see her from my peripheral.
"It's about to start storming soon, you should come inside." Her voice was softer than usual.
"Are you okay?" I asked
"I'm alright. Are you?" I nodded yes.
I wasn't, I kept thinking about the times I was made to look like a fool for having panic attacks over the simplest things as a child. I needed fresh air and to breathe. The night air made it even better.
Taylor was right, I needed to join her inside the tent. I got up, dusted my pants off and crawled inside.
She was rubbing her head. "Headache?" I asked
"Yeah, I get bad migraines from time to time."
I was wondering why I haven't seen her today, she's usually out and about with other camp members
"Sucks that we don't have any medicine." I said. She nodded agreeingly.
"I feel like I'm dreaming, honestly." I said
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I don't understand what's happening. It all happened so fast and without any signs. It seems like It came straight from a movie."
"I know how you feel, it's distressing."
I leaned back onto the ragged blanket I had balled up as a pillow. It honestly didn't offer much support.
The outside of the tent shook as Charlotte banged on the outside.
"Hey guys, everyone has to meet near O'neils shack in 10 minutes. Don't be late." I heard her trample off. I sat back up in groaned. The sun had already set and I was ready for slumber.
Taylor was equally irritated at the fact we had to get out.
Me and Taylor both crawled out of the tent.
I stretched my body out and looked up at the stars. They were twinkling just enough to make me smile. Each tent out lanterns lit up beside them. Some sitting outside by them.
We walked towards the shack that already had a small group gathered around it.
We walked up towards Danica, who was Already there. "Hey you guys!" She said. "Where are the boys?"
"Not sure, we didn't see them."
"Huh, that's not like them. Especially Cameron." She rubbed her temple's.
"Did you know them before all this?" Taylor asked.
"Oh yeah, Dax is my brother and Cam is my old friend my high school. I just met Keenan though."
"Well that's cool." I felt awkward, I always feel awkward each time Keenans' name is said. What is going on with me?
Other's started gathering around us. I twisted my head and observed the growing crowd. There seems like there is more people. I heard loud footsteps coming from the front of the crowd. I jolted my attention towards them.
O'neil was standing on a standing stool. Dr. Bowing was beside him holding a stack of papers. She looked beyond anxious. Her nervous sweating almost made me start sweating.
"Attention everyone, I hope you all are having a great night so far, I know alot of you are ready for sleep. I am also myself. But Ms. Tarah Bowing has brought something to my attention, franticly. This is something I believe we should all know about. Dr. Bowing, I hand this to you." He stepped down and gestured for her to step up.
She nodded at him and stepped up on the stool. She seemingly was nervous and looked as if she was ready to vomit.
"For many years I worked at trauma hospital's and rehabilitation centers, I've seen disgusting things, things that would send the unexpecting human mind into a spiral. I've heard all sorts of conversations behind closed doors. I've even questioned the things I've heard, just blew it off as me being extremely tired.."
She took a huge gulp.
"Before everything went down I did research on the 'Company' that the hospital I worked at was working with."
She started flipping through the pages in her hands.
"Does anyone remember the government questionnaire? The one that was hosted 3 years ago? Where everyone gathered at local health offices, in reward would be one thousand dollars?"
She looked at the crowd and her eyes looked broken. I knew what she was talking about. My parents participated, that's what they used for Christmas.
"I did research on the company that held the event. The Golden Snakes, you don't know that name because it was hidden by the name of 'American Quality Bureau'. After my research I was sick. The Golden Snakes wanted control over this country, they wanted this country for themselves. Nevada isn't the only place like this, it's the whole damn country. With a little more research I've discovered that it's not only the country, but the entire world.
I started to feel as if I was soon to have another panic attack.
"What I did was illegal, but I highly doubt it will have any repercussions now, we've all seen the poor souls out there that have fallen for this. Those people are those who attended the event. They have been injected with a small chip that is making them sick. The Golden Snake had a plan to use the people Injected as a way to eradicate those who didn't. They have an army of brainwashed individuals. They can sense those of us who are not injected. If they sense us, we are as good as dead. Now I don't know what this means for us, just know that there is other survivors out there, other camps. We have to find them and work together. I just wish I confronted them when I overheard the conversations." She rested her shoulders and sighed. "Thank you all for joining me." She stepped down and shook O'neils hand.
There was a brief moment of silence before the air was full of chatter. Taylor looked at me in disbelief. "My Aunt attended one of those stupid questionnaire things." I looked back at her. "So did my mom and dad." I wanted to vomit.
I turned around and felt a force push back. I shook my head and looked up. "Hello!" Keenan held a smile on his face, Cameron and Dax beside him. "Oh hey." I lost my breath. "What did I miss?" He asked. "Alot, let's meet at the south gate." Danica said before taking off.
"Do you wanna meet her?" Taylor asked.
"No you go, I don't feel very well so Im gonna go to lay down." I assured her. She had a concerned look on her face then took off.
I walked up towards the gate near the east entrance. The air was chilly. The wind didn't make it any better. I needed time alone. I sat down on the ground and folded my legs. I placed my head on the gate. Within seconds of silence I began to cry. I missed my mom and dad, I couldn't get those images of them out of my head. On top of that I watched my sister take her last breath, no one, no one is alive. The tears just kept coming. I was at a camp with people I don't know. There's still tension between me and Taylor. I saw my parents dead, both of them dead. Everything was hurting.
I grabbed onto the gate and took a deep breath in. My vision blurry from the tears. My chest was hurting with her heartbeat. I looked around and I started to feel as if I wasn't myself. I leaned back onto the gate and just let the dissociation episode take its course.
