Three weeks after war is declared, the final day of training rests upon the soldiers.

I slammed my body into the wooden plank that Charlotte placed up for me. I heard the grunts of my fellow soldiers doing the same. Charlotte decided to test us on our durability on taking a full force hit. my shoulder was throbbing from the multiple blows but I couldn't give up, I had more to go. I believe Captain just wanted the best for us.

I started pushing against the board, breaking against the force. "Fuck that hurts." I looked over and saw Taylor on the ground, rubber her ankle. I pushed the plank up and sat It down. "Are you okay?" I asked her.

"I'm okay, I just stepped and twisted my ankle the wrong way." She used me and prep. She took a step and yelped. "You need to rest." I helped her too a log and sat her down. "Just prop it up it should be better soon." I rubbed her back and went back off training. Charlotte pulled me too the side. "If her foot is not better by tomorrow she won't be able to fight." I looked down. "I know that, just give her time."

I moved over towards shooting. I needed to practice my headshots, I focused my sight on the target, preparing myself to take the shot. I stopped. My brain almost felt as if I had a moment of reconning. Why were we so quick to go to war?

I shook it off, I needed to focus, these thoughts shouldn't be able to get to me in this moment. I took a deep breath in and took the shot. The bullet missed. Fuck..

Today was the last day before we stormed into the nearby neighborhood, I know that seems minor but not knowing what we are up against, made it seem huge.

The plan was to enter from the south and work our way up. We were going to clear the neighborhood of the mindless, border the entrances and claim it as our own. One step at a time till the free minded own everything.

I placed the gun down and walked back towards my friends. They all seemed exhausted. The sun was soon to start setting.

Later that night.

"You wouldn't know one thing about crafting if it killed you!" Cameron was on the defense as Dax made ruthless jokes on his former hobby. "Stick, stick, glue, glue, boom! Science project!" Dax laughed. Everyone was gathered around a fire. The final night before some of us died, it's ruthless to think but it is the truth.

"Alright fag, why are you yelling about irrelevant shit?" A nearby girl questioned. "Excuse me?" Cameron seemed offended.

"You heard me, faggot, what's bothering you?"

"Leave him alone, Stacie." Danica stood up, fighting position in place.

"Why are you sitting here calling him a slur?" Asked Taylor, standing up herself.

"Because he's gay, or did he not tell everyone yet?" Stacie reprimanded.

"He's been out to me and my sister for years now, why are you acting like it's such a big thing?" Asked Dax.

"Oh I didn't know if he told his little survivor group here." She smirked.

"Yo, Stacie, if he's gay, guess what, we don't care." I said, annoyed.

"Oh, okay, damn, your mommy and daddy sure care." She said, inticing drama.

"Back the fuck off!" Danica yelled.

"Faggot!" She yelled, before leaning back, spitting blood out her mouth.

I looked up and gasped. Taylor had punched her in the face out of nowhere. Out of instinct, I lunged up and grabbed Taylor to prevent more of escalation. She pulled from me, clearly wanting more. Stacie fell back and looked up. Everyone gathered.

"So what if he's gay, leave him the fuck alone, stupid cunt!" She screamed.

"What the fuck is going on?!" A male voice pierced the ears of everyone.

Captain O'neil walked up, distain on his face.

"You all are supposed to be Soldiers, act like it. This is distasteful." He spit before walking away.

Stacie got up with a death glare on her face before walking away.

"Taylor?" I asked, hands still around her. She paid me no attention. "Cameron, I'm so sorry people act like towards you, you don't deserve it." Her voice started cracking.

"It's okay." He smiled. Taylor calmed down and sat beside me.

"I got kicked out of my house about 6 years ago for being gay, I moved in with Danica and Dax because their family accepted me." Cameron said.

"Hey man, you're a good guy, you being into guys doesn't determine your worth. My aunt is or was gay, she has or had a wife and I loved hanging out with her." Keenan spoke, a smile on his face.

"We love you dude." I said and smiled at him. "We need to rest, it's a big day tomorrow. I'll see you all in the morning." I said, walking off.

I got back to my tent and my mind started racing. Why am I doing this? I just met these people only two months ago, why am I so close? Why?
