Romulus and I yanked apart from each other and returned our hands to ourselves. It was Bayne at the door.
"Appears I interrupted something." Bayne said.
My face felt like fire as it turned red.
"No, no. I came to Romulus. I had a question. Yeah. Bayne! He knows a way we can find someone to track the wolf!"
"Really? And who's that?" Bayne said, raising an eyebrow.
"The witches. They can track almost anyone." I said.
"We can't go to the witches." Bayne crossed his arms.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because Bayne has history with the witches. They don't really like him." Said Romulus.
"Why? What did you do?" I asked.
"Doesn't matter. It was a long time ago." Huffed Bayne.
"Can we at least try?" I asked Bayne.
"No. I'm going to get dinner. Your dad wants you to go talk to him. His orders." Bayne closed the door behind him.
I was still full of nerves. I wonder if Bayne had seen me and Romulus kissing, I thought. It was unlikely that he didn't, or maybe we had pulled away just in time.
"I should go. See what my father wants." I hopped down off the counter. It was late afternoon, sunset would be beginning soon.
"Alright. I'll see you later. Stay safe." Said Romulus, giving a small wave.
My cheeks were still the color of a cherry. Romulus was my first kiss I've had in years. Of course Bayne walked in. I wondered what he was thinking, if he was judging me.
My dad came downstairs, down to the dinner hall. Food was beginning to be served. Pancakes.
He came up to me."Hello, son. Did you and Bayne find what he needed?"
"Yeah. I think so. We might stay tomorrow too, though. You know, to make sure we didn't forget anything."
"That's understandable. I wanted to ask you something. I haven't announced to the pack about you. That you're my son. Is it alright if I do so?"
"Of course, dad." I said. I was looking over his shoulder, searching for Bayne.
"I'll do it tonight. Make sure you get plenty of food, your girlfriend too."
He patted my shoulder.
"Will do, dad. Thanks."
He left to join his seat up at the front of the room. I joined the line for food and filled my plate. I saw Bayne carry his food towards the front table. I caught up to him.
"I know what you're going to say. We can't go tomorrow. We can't see them."
"Why? Please, Bayne. You don't even have to talk to them. Just come with. Maybe Romulus can come too, he's friends with them."
"Just because you have a new boy toy doesn't mean he can do everything for you."
I stopped. Bayne walked to his seat up at the front table, by my dad, Adolpha, and Dakota.
I found Nadine at a table towards the front right and joined her. People would stare at her. They knew she wasn't one of them.
There were about thirty five people in the room, mainly men. There were some women scattered, but not nearly as many. They were all beautiful.
"Is it just me or is everyone here like. Really hot?" Said Nadine, looking around the room.
"I think it's a wolf thing. One of the few perks of being a cursed monster, I guess."
My dad stood up at the main table.
"ATTENTION! Thank you, everyone for joining me for this meal before the moon rise. I have a special announcement. As some of you know, we had a new wolf join us around a week ago. He is my son. I thought I had lost him, but he had found his way back to me!" My father signaled me to rise.
I slowly stood up, staring around the room. I spotted Sirius at the table next to me, and Romulus in the back. I didn't know if I should have made eye contact with him.
"My son is taking a new approach to our wolf lifestyle. He is attempting to balance out a human life, with the wolf life. It is an extremely difficult task, especially for a youngling. But, if he is successful, I am hoping to do more of this in the future. Your council member Bayne has been accompanying him, making sure he hasn't had any incidents. My son will reside here, and at home in the human world."
His audience's reactions were mixed. Some seemed excited, others seemed bored. Some began to whisper. Sirius's table was shooting me glares. Romulus seemed content, with a small smile formed on his lips. I began to form a small smile back.
"Please respect and welcome, my son, Erin Tesla. And his kind girlfriend, Nadine."
