Everyone in the house scrambled. The cops were coming in to round up students. There were at least four of them barging in.

Nadine grabbed my arm.

"Follow me! Hurry!"

I followed her into the bathroom. There was a small window above the toilet. She began to climb through it.

"We're climbing out that?"

"Yes! Unless you want to get an underage!"

She shoved her body outside and crouched low.

"Hurry!"

It was hard to get my long legs through, but I was thin. I slid through the window and slammed into the ground. My glasses landed on the grass.

"Let's go!"

I grabbed my glasses and followed her. We ran and stayed low to the ground. My heart was thumping. I had never had an interaction with the police before, and I had no desire to. Nadine was wild.

"Do you see that over there?" She pointed ahead.

"A baseball field?"

"Yes, let's go hide in the dugouts until the coast is clear!"

We made it to the baseball field. The lights were still on. It was the campus practice field. We laid low in the baseball dugout as we heard the police round up as many kids as they could.

"Having a fun night?"

"First night on my own and it's already been the best night of my life." I admitted, letting out a winded breath.

"Running from the cops has been the best night of your life?" She asked.

"Sounds silly, I know."

"Nah, I get it. The freedom is nice."

"I couldn't really hear well when you were introducing me to your friends. Can you tell me about them?"

"So Lidia and Dante I met beginning my freshman year. They aren't dating, but they're totally going to end up together. She's an art major, and my roommate. He's pre-law, but he's mainly doing it because his parents want to. I bet he'll switch before the semester is over. Then there's Pax. I met him in one of my classes last semester, he's quiet at first, but really sweet. I think you'll like them. Do you have a roommate?"

"I do, he hasn't left his computer chair yet."

"Oh, one of those guys. Only will take a week for him to start stinking up the room."

We both laughed. We continued to talk most of the night. She told me about the food to avoid at the cafeteria, and the best times to use the communal showers. The cops had left a while before we realized we were lost in conversation.

"Looks like we're safe now. We should head back to the dorms."

"Yeah, it's late."

We walked back to the dorms.

"Nadine. Thank you."

"Of course. Give me your number so we can hang out again soon."

We exchanged numbers and other contact information before separating to bed. From then on, I had a friend at West Haven. I didn't know it then, but I had just met my best friend for life.

My roommate was still playing on his computer when I came back late. Was he ever going to sleep? I took off my glasses and rolled towards the wall to sleep.

Classes began the next day. I woke up at eight in the morning. My roommate was asleep. Finally.

My classes were overall pretty simple so far, we went over the syllabus and did ice breaker activities. I didn't meet anyone, but Nadine texted me, telling me to meet her and her friends for lunch.

I was nervous to meet them sober, but if Nadine liked them they must be cool, I told myself. I got a veggie wrap from the cafeteria and joined them at a table. The cafeteria was busy.

"Hey, Erin!" Waved Nadine. I sat next to her.

"Hi. Hey everyone."

"Nadine was just telling us how you guys made it out of the frat house before the cops came in." Said Dante.

"Yeah, you guys are so lucky! We all got underages!" Lidia slumped down in her chair.

"Yeah, this may or may not be my third one." Said Pax, finishing off his sandwich.

"You gotta be careful, dude." Dante told Pax while eating purple grapes.

"You just have to think fast, and not be afraid to climb out a bathroom window." Said Nadine.

"You went into the frat boys bathroom? Gross!" Said Lidia. She wasn't wrong.

"Better than getting an underage. Next time we'll have to bring our own bottle. Those Jell-O shots were way overpriced. Did you even taste any alcohol in them, Erin?"

"No, not really. We can make our own next time. Maybe make them stronger?"

"We should! Just be careful with the RA's. If they see anything suspicious we could get in trouble."

"We need to do something besides drinking every weekend and risking an underage." Said Pax.

"Like what?" Said Dante.

"I know! We can go to Casper Woods. It's a campsite up north." Pax suggested.

"Yes! I heard it's haunted!" Said Nadine.

"Do you really believe in ghosts?" Dante scoffed.

"I don't know, but I heard it gets pretty spooky at night. Legend says there was a little boy there who visited there with his brother.Something got him. They found him dead in the water, covered in claw marks."

"So what, a fish that needs a pedicure killed her?" Dante said. We laughed.

"Scared, are you?" She said.

"No. No! I'm not scared." Snapped Dante.

"Great. Guess we're going camping this weekend."

"I just remembered! I need to help my dad. I need to help him. Cut down trees. Yeah." Said Dante, scratching the back of his neck.

"That's too bad. Guess we'll have to go next weekend. Are you in, Erin?"

I sipped my water. I was scared, but I couldn't miss the opportunity to bond with my new friends.

"Of course I'm down."

"Ha! Erin is a lot cooler than you cowards!" Nadine laughed.

"I'm not a coward! I'll go!" Announced Pax.

"We're all going. It'll be fun." Announced Lidia.

I had never gone camping before, but how bad could it be? I thought. I could never imagine how much going would change my life, and not for the better.
