Meredith woke up to a quiet house. Bailey and Zola both had a sleepover with Sofia at Callie and Arizona's place, and her husband was in DC. She desperately missed Derek everyday. She's never felt this lonely in a long time, probably when Derek was with Addison.
She dragged herself out of bed and went to the bathroom to get ready. After relieving herself in the toliet, she brushed her hair and her teeth and went downstairs to the empty kitchen. Grabbing a cup of coffee, she checked her phone and saw a message from Derek that he sent last night. "Hey - hope your doing okay and the kids aren't giving you a hard time. I love you so much. I'll see you on Friday." He sent. Friday. That was too long for Meredith. It was tuesday, and she desperately wanted her husband to hold her. "I'm fine. The kids slept over at Callies and Arizona's last night. I love you too." She sent back.
When she finished her cup of coffee, she left the house and got into her car, and drove off to work.
Derek called when she was about 20 minutes away from work and she answered. "Hello?" His voice asked. "Hey Derek." Meredith replied quietly. "Hey Mer. How are you? You sound exhausted." He said, concern evident in his voice. "I'm okay. Tired." She said as she suppressed a yawn. Dereks heart broke as he listened to her tired voice. He could almost picture her exhausted expression, yawning every 10 minutes. "Whatcha up to?" Derek asked, trying to lighten the mood. "Just driving to work. I miss you." Meredith said as she tried not to let herself cry. "I miss you too Mer." Derek replied. "How you doing over there?" Meredith asked. "It's aweosme. I met the president and we talked about neurotransmitters." Derek said as he went on and on about it. Meredith was barely paying attention, which she felt bad for, but she was exhausted. "Hey Der, I'm about to go into a bad reception area." She said. "Mer? Mer are you still there?" He said through the phone, the line crackling. Meredith opened her mouth to say soemtning when the phone hung up. She sighed and kept on driving.
2 cars zoomed past her on the opposite side of the street and Meredith scoffed at their ignorance. "Damn." She muttered. She watched as the cars flew up the street, one of them hitting an on coming car in the left lane, the other still flying down the road. Meredith slammed on the breaks and gasped. "Holy shit." She exclaimed. When all the cars came to a halt, Meredith got out of the car and ran over to the first car, who was on its roof. Meredith climbed up using the tire and leaned over the drivers seat. The driver, who was still concious and awake started yelling. The window was open, so they could talk. "Please, you gotta get us out! My daughter is in the back!" The frantic woman yelled. "Okay maam. My name is Meredith. I'm a surgeon. Can you tell me your name?" Meredith asked calmly. "S-Sydney. My daughter, her name is Winnie. You gotta get us out." The mother begged. "Okay. I will. Relax." Meredith said softly.
Meredith ran to her car and opened the trunk, and was surprised when she found a crowbar. She ran back over to the crash and climbed on the car. "Cover your face if you can. It's safety glass, so it won't hurt you." Meredith said as she remembered whag Derek told her. The woman did so and Meredith slammed the crowbar into the window, smashing little glass pieces everywhere.
"Okay, can you unbuckle yourself for me?" Meredith asked. The woman nodded and did so. "Alrighty, I'm gonna pull you out now." Meredith said. She reached in and put her arms under her armpits and pulled as hard as she could. The woman whimpered in pain as Meredith somehow managed to get her out. She said her down on the ground. "Okay, try not to move, okay? I'm gonna get your daughter out now." Meredith said. She stood up and climbed the car again, this time toward the backseat. "Hi sweetie, what's your name?" She asked. "Winnie." The girl whimpered. "Okay Winnie, I'm gonna break the glass now, okay? Cover your face." Meredith instructed. She took the crowbar and slammed it into the back window once again, shattering it.
"Can you try to move up here?" Meredith asked. The girl nodded and she slowly climbed up to the window. Meredith hoisted the girl out of the car and laid her down next to her mother. "I gotta go help the other people. You guys okay?" Meredith asked. "We're okay." Sydney confirmed.
Meredith nodded and ran off to the other car which was on the opposite side of the road. "Hello?" She called out. "H-help." She heard someone whisper. A few feet ahead in front over the car, she saw a crumpled man laying on the ground. She ran over and checked his pulse, which was weak and thready. She flipped him onto his back and examined him. "Hey buddy, can you tell me your name?" She asked the teenager. "Johnny." He whispered. "Okay Johnny. We're gonna get you outta here, okay?" Meredith said. The boy nodded weakly.
Smelling smoke, she looked back at the car which was now smoking. "Johnny we gotta get away from here now." Meredith exclaimed. Meredith practically made him stand up and he left heavily on her as the car was about to explode. Meredith managed to bring the two of them to the other injured people before the car exploded with a loud bang and an eruption of fire.
She laid Johnny down next to the other people and started assessing them one by one. "Sydney, your knee is dislocated. I have to pop it back before it causes permanent damage. This is going to hurt." Meredith warned. She nodded and smiled weakly. "1,2,3." Meredith said as she popped the knee back into place. Sydney hollered in pain, tears coming to her eyes. "Okay. Your okay." Meredith murmered as she checked the kid. "Winnie, you look okay except for that cut on your head. Does anybting hurt?" Meredith asked softly. Winnie shook her head and Meredith checked on Johnny. "Johnny, does anytning hurt?" She asked, not seeing any external injuries except a few cuts and bruises. "My stomach hurts." He said quietly. Meredith lifted up his shirt and gasped when he saw organs. "What-what's wrong?" He stammered. "Nothing. You just a have a little cut on your tummy." Meredith lied. She pulled off her shirt which was the only thing she thought of to try to stop the bleeding and pressed it to his abdomen.
"I'm gonna go try to call for help." Meredith said. She stepped away and took out her phone. She dialed 911, and was surprised when it picked up since she was in a bad reception area. "911, what's your emergency." The dispatcher asked. "Hi, my name is dr Meredith grey and I just witnessed a 2 car mvc on Southside Road. I helped them as best as I could but we need help soon." Meredith explained. "Okay Dr Grey. Help is on the way." The dispatcher said as Meredith hung up the phone.
"Help is on the way guys." Meredith said as she returned to the victims and sat next to them. "Thank you." Sydney said. "Anytime." Meredith responded.
A few minutes later, ambulances arrived. "Nice job Dr Grey. Do you want a ride to work? We're bringing them to Seattle Grace." Ray the paramedic whom Meredith worked with offered. "Thanks, but I have my car. I'll see you later ray." She said as the ambulances drove off. Meredith got into her pulled over car and started backing up when she heard her ohone ringing. She reached down into the crack where her phone fell and almost got it when she heard a truck coming her way. She looked up out her window and barely had time to shield herself before the semi collided with her car and everything when black.
