What if it was Meredith

Chapter 27

Today was Merediths 6 month check up after her accident. Meredith really didn't see the need to have one as she had been fine, but Bailey insisted.

She got up, her 28 week bump getting in the way, and went downstairs. She heard Derek with the kids and smiled as she entered the living room. "Morning." Derek said as she sat down next to him, giving her a kiss on the cheek. Bailey scrambled into her lap and smiled. "Hi mama." Bailey said. "Hi bailey boo." Meredith said happily.

"Ready for your appointment?" He asked. "I guess. I don't see the point." Meredith replied with an annoyed sigh. "What appoinnemt?" Zola asked curiously. "Mama has a check up with the doctor." Derek replied. "Oh." Zola said. "Let's get ready." Meredith said, pulling Bailey up and resting him gently on her chest.

They changed the kids and themselves and met back up downstairs. "How's our little girl?" Derek asked a he placed a hand on her bump, the other on her waist. "Kicking like crazy." Meredith replied with a smile. Derek laughed and kissed Meredith. "Let's go." He said softly.

They got into the car and drove off to the hospital.

Once they got there, they dropped the kids off and Meredith and Derek made their way to Bailey. "Ah, Shepherd, Grey, right on time. Let's get this over with, I know you don't even want to be here." Bailey said as she led them to an exam room.

"Alright, have you been experiencing any waves of nausea, dizziness, or blurriness?" Bailey asked. "Nope." Meredith replied. Bailey checked her pupils. "Now, let's test your range of motion with that arm and leg. Raise your leg and move it left and right and up and down please." Bailey requested.

Meredith did so, with a slight wince. "That hurt?" She asked with a frown. "It's just a little pinch. It's not a big deal, it'll go away soon." Mereditj replied. Bailey sighed but nodded. "Okay, and you haven't been experiencing any chest pain, correct?" She asked as she used her stethoscope and listened
To her chest.

"Okay Grey. Everything sounds good. Want me to check that baby out for you while I'm here?" Bailey asked.  Meredith looked at Derek and both nodded.

Bailey put some gel on her stomach and hooked up the ultrasound machine. "She looks perfect." Bailey said with a smile as she moved the probe around. Meredith and Derek smiled. "You may have a big girl on your hands." Bailey said with a laugh. "Alright. Your good Grey." She said. "Thank you de Bailey." Meredith and Derek said gratefully. "Anyone. See you two around." Bailey said before leaving.

"I'm proud of you." Derek said as he kissed her forehead. "For what?" Meredith asked in confusion. "Being you. And making it through everything. You amaze me every day." He said with smile that melted her heart. "I love you." She said. "I love you too."

After the check up, Meredith and Derek split ways and headed to their own surgeries. Meredith had a surgery with Cristina, and she loved it. "How you liking it back so far?" Meredith asked. "It's great. Just like before." Cristina replied. "Who's Owen with?" Cristina whispered curiously. "I...I think Amelia. I don't know though for sure." Meredith replied quietly. Cristina sighed.

Derek, on the other hand, had a very chatty post op patient, who had his whole family in the room. "Dr Shepherd, you have any kids?" Dan, his patient asked. "2. 1 on the way." Derek replied. "How old are they if you don't mind me asking?" He asked. "My son is 3 and my daughter is 4. And my wife is 28 weeks." Derek replied proudly.

"Wow. This is Timmy, he's 4, and this is lily, she's 9. We can barely handle the two of them." Tina, the patients wife said with a laugh. "And you said your wife is a doctor too?" Dan asked. "She is." He replied. "You guys handle it well, with your professions and all." Tina said. "Thank you." Derek said with a smile.

Meredith and Derek met up for lunch, but Meredith was exhausted. "Let's take a quick nap." Derek suggested. Meredith nodded and let him help her to an on call room. "Did you not sleep well last night?" He asked softly as they laid down in the small bed.

"She would not stop kicking." Meredith mumbled, already half asleep. "I'm sorry." Derek apologized. "It's not your fault." She replied. "It kind of is." Derek said with a chuckle. Meredith laughed and swatted his chest playfully. "Get some rest, I'll be here when you wake up." Derek promised as he held her close, Meredith drifting asleep quickly.

Meredith woke up an hour and a half later and just cuddled into Derek. She turned around so that she was facing him and watched him sleep. She didn't understand why he did it, but now she does. He looks so peaceful. Meredith buried her head into his shoulder and inhaled his woodsy scent that she loved so much.

Derek unconsciously pulled her closer and sighed contently. His unshaven stubble tickled her face, but she wouldn't have it any other way. To think after all these years she'd she still be laying in dereks arms made her heart warm. She loved him, in a way she never thought she could.
