Chapter 10

Dex's POV

I was at Widgetmore, petting the soft back of the tomple on my lap, thinking of my latest invention. I thought everyone had completely forgotten about me until Calla and Sophie came over.

"Who's there?" Tinker called.

"It's Sophie!" she yelled back.

I heard the calming noise of gears whirring as the front door slid upward.

"Dex," Sophie came running through the hall.

"What? You need me to build a baby feeder again?" I rolled my eyes.

"Dex, this is serious. Vespera wants to kill me. She's doing it today."

"So you want armour or something?"

"No! I need you to build a robot clone of me."

I grabbed my stuff and got to work. I probably should've called Tinker. She was the master at the realistic animals, but I wanted to talk to Sophie.

"So, what crazy mission did you go on this time Sophie?"

"Actually, It wasn't me. Calla and Kenric did it all!"

Calla lifted her head proudly.

"Kenric? So now I don't even get to meet your second child?"

"Wh-what? Oh. Dex it's not like th-"

"No, I get it. Your life is too awesome to have me in it. You probably have a new best friend, you honestly might even get pregnant again, and I won't even know until you come rushing to me with a project. Kenric probably doesn't even know my name!"

"Dex, I'm really sorry if you felt that way. You are always gonna have a place in my heart, Dex. You're my cousin, after all."

"Sure, easy for you to say. But maybe, just maybe, could you stop by more often, maybe I could come for dinner or something or, or-"

"Of course Dex! Anytime. And I promise, we'll always be best friends." She gave me a big hug.

"Anyway, where were we? Oh yeah, that clone could be done in a day, maybe two." I told her.

"I'm not sure mom has that time." Calla looked worried.

"I'm sure she doesn't." I spun around to see a large guard in the room.

"Orrep?" Sophie lifted her head to gaze at the gigantic ogre looming above her. "What's wrong?"

Before Sophie got her answer, his monstrous hands were around all three of us. Then I blacked out.
