Chapter 14

Fitz's POV

My head felt faint as I fluttered my eyes open.

"Well, well, well... what do we have here?" A voice from the other end of the room snarled.

"V-Vespera?"

"Awww, perfect little Vacker boy doesn't even remember the person who gave his sister scars. Yes it's me, dumb dumb!" My heart thumped in my chest as I thought of what to say next.

"What do you want from me?"

"Your powerful wife asked the same question. I just want her dead!"

"Well, you've got the wrong person captive, then!"

"Is that so? Or is it just that you can't see my whole plan?"

"Then tell me your whole plan!" I said, attempting to test my luck.

"Alright, Wonderboy. I want you to kill the Moonlark. So I'll hypnotize you so that you'll obey my wishes!" She cackled.

I snorted. "Psh. This is not a magical world, Vespera. Don't try to scare me!"

"If I wanted to scare you, you would already be paralized. Anyhow, if you choose not to heed the warning I gave you, suit yourself! Perro! Get the thing!"

"Yes, Master," an ogre said from the corner.

His footsteps shook the whole... wherever we were as he walked through a wall. I wasn't surprised - after all, Vespera was the master of illusions. He came back with an object as big as my big toe. What seemed like the top of it swirled with black and yellow wavy lines. The side was lined with three buttons - one red one, one green one, and a black one. Vespera slid the gadget on her index finger as if she had sprained it.

"Shall we begin?" Vespera grinned.

"Begin what?"

"Sophie's demise."

She reached for the green button. Before I could react, she had shoved her finger into the button.

My brain seemed as if it was electrocuted. In a blink of an eye, my mind was filled with the idea of killing Sophie. I couldn't do that! But the more that the ideas wandered around, the more they devoured me. The zombie thoughts drowned out all of the good times I had with her.

There's no way you're coming with me! The memory showed in front of me. You're so useless!

She hadn't said that! The monsters in my mind changed every memory I had of her. And the more moments they changed, the more I could believe them. Sophie never did any good! She just held me back and called me useless! But I'm not useless. I'd show her.

I blankly said aloud, "Kill Sophie Elizabeth Foster."
