Chapter 8

Sophie's POV

"What do you want from me?" I snarled, trying to stay strong for my family.

"Me?" Vespera asked. "I want you dead. For revenge, yes, but also for your powers."

"How does killing me give you my powers?" I wondered.

"You know I'm a scientist. Anyway, now that I've done my part, you are gonna go back to your family and pretend that none of this happened."

"You expect me to do that?"

"Yes, I do. Unless you want to die here, of course. Though knowing you, you would rather do that with your family. Enough talk, off you go."

She handed me a clear crystal.

"Nuh-uh. No way."

"Are you sure? 'Cause I could kill you now and leave you to rot."

"If you could do that," I argued. "Then why are you sending me back?"

"Now, I don't want to spoil the whole plan."

"Fine then. We'll figure it out ourselves." I snatched the crystal and leaped away.

I thought the crystal would take me home, but instead, I found myself right in front of Calla's panakes tree. "Oh Calla," I bent down on my knees. "How could you do it? Leave everyone you love to save everyone else?"

I don't know if I was hallucinating, but I could swear I heard her say, "I didn't leave you guys, I just... changed form."

I smiled at that. Then I realized I had to get back to Lilygrotto. I wiped away the few tears that were falling and headed towards the leapmaster. I stepped forward and got whisked away into the light.
