switching seats

Remus awoke the next morning on the right side of his bed instead of the middle. He glanced over and it looked like there was an imprint, like someone had been there but wasn't anymore. The werewolf shrugged and thought that James probably wanted to drunk cuddle so it wasn't a huge deal.

He sat upright and rubbed his eyes, then looked around the room. Remus realized that the dorm was empty and he worriedly glanced at the clock. 8:15 AM

If he hurried, he could get some breakfast before he went to classes. Remus quickly changed into his uniform, then grabbed his satchel and raced down to the Great Hall. On his way there, he didn't see any of his friends so he thought that they were probably already at breakfast.

"What is Sirius doing in my seat?" were the first words that came out of his mouth all morning. His entire group of friends turned to him when they noticed his presence but Caroline just looked at her plate.

"Well we didn't know if you were going to show up to breakfast so I thought it would be okay to sit in your seat," Sirius said. "Unless it's not okay, then I can move back to my regular seat."

"It's fine," Remus huffed. The sandy-haired boy found Sirius' usual seat, which was next to James, and he let out an annoyed sigh. "Why didn't you guys wake me up?" he hissed.

"You locked us out of the dorm almost all night," the bespectacled boy complained. "Your dream girl, I assume, opened it and left, then we walked in and you were knocked out cold. So we thought we would let you sleep in and come get your after breakfast."

"My dream girl was in our dorm?" Remus frowned.

"Yeah," he grumbled. "At least I think so. She didn't really fit the 'euphoria' description you gave us though. I mean, whatever floats your boat man."

"I had to sleep on the bloody couch all night," James droned on. "The point is, changing seats is not that big of a big deal so Sirius didn't think you would mind. Besides, he looks so happy." Remus grouchily stabbed a pancake with his fork and glanced over at Sirius and Caroline.

The Black boy turned and whispered something to Caroline, causing the blonde to giggle. Remus didn't like how close he was to Caroline and his brown eyes widened significantly when he leaned over and kissed her cheek.

"What the fuck is he doing?" Remus asked quietly.

"He just kissed her cheek. It's not a huge deal, dude. Oh, you probably weren't there last night because you were shagging your dream girl," James said. "Last night, Caroline and Sirius became official."

Remus felt his whole world stop and everything suddenly became silent. People seemed to move and continue doing things but he couldn't hear anything. James' mouth was moving slowly but the sandy-haired boy couldn't understand a word he was saying.

Remus' eyebrows furrowed and he looked down at his plate, then glanced up and looked at Caroline. His brown eyes focused on her when everything else was blurry but everything started to fade again when he realized that she wasn't looking at him.

She was looking at Sirius and she wore a smile that Remus loved so much. She laughed and the only thing that Remus could hear in the silenced hall was her laugh, so melodic and airy.

Then Sirius' laughs cut through hers and Remus heard the both of them laughing, together, and he absolutely hated it. The sandy-haired boy suddenly felt nauseous and politely excused himself from the table.

Caroline was unwillingly pulled into a broom closet on her way to lunch and found herself in a stuffy dark room that she actually used to like. "Why are you with Sirius? I thought the pact wasn't over for two more days," Remus said. "Do you actually fancy him?"

"I talked to Lily and Marlene about Sirius and they ended the thing early," Caroline replied quickly, not really in the mood to talk to him. She pulled her ring out from the pocket of her robes and held it out to him. "You can take that back."

"What? Why would I take it back?" Remus asked. He held his hand out and she dropped the ring into his palm and Remus just stared at it sadly.

"I don't need it anymore," the Pettigrew girl huffed. "You can give it to that other girl if you'd like, I really couldn't care less."

"What're you talking about, darling? Of course you don't need it but I thought you liked it. You said it was perfect," Remus said sadly. The fact that he called her 'darling' made it even worse because she assumed that the nickname was meant for her and only her but she had witnessed Remus calling that other girl darling last night.

"Well, I lied," she stated bluntly, breaking Remus' heart into a million pieces in the process. "I'll see you around, Remus."

She turned around to leave and Remus desperately grabbed her wrist to try to make her stay and explain what was going on. Caroline whipped around angrily and pulled herself out of his grip, then slapped him across the face harshly. "Don't touch me," she spat.

Remus held the side of his face to try and stop the stinging pain. Everywhere hurt, not just his face. His heart hurt from Caroline's words and his stomach hurt because he couldn't eat without seeing Caroline and Sirius together. His hand hurt because the ring that was just given back to him felt like it was burning a hole in his hand.

"I just don't understand-"

"I don't understand either. You told me you loved me and that was complete bullshit. What kind of person does that? The worst part is that I actually thought I was in love with you. I thought about a future with you and now that I think about it, it was just bloody pathetic," Caroline seethed.

"Darling, I thought about a future with you too. I thought about marrying you and getting a dog and buying a house together and-"

"I don't want to hear your bullshit, Remus. I have to get to lunch." The blonde let out a frustrated sigh and left the broom closet, leaving Remus alone in the darkness.

He sat down in the broom closet and leaned his back on the door. The werewolf stared at the ring sadly and held it in between his thumb and index finger. "I don't understand," he repeated.

---------------

"James?"

"Yeah?" James asked, clearly annoyed with all the questions. He practically lived with Remus for years now and never knew the guy had so many questions until he switched seats with Sirius in the Great Hall.

"Who's the girl that left my dorm this morning? Can you point her out?" Remus pleaded. The werewolf wanted to talk to the girl about what happened so he could have a clearer memory towards why Caroline was mad at him and why she was suddenly with Sirius.

"Moony, if I point her out, will you stop asking me questions? Because I'm really trying to talk to Lily right now and you're being bloody annoying," the Gryffindor Chaser demanded.

"Yes, I will stop asking questions. Now can you point her out?" the werewolf begged desperately. James let out an exaggerated sigh and pointed towards a blonde girl at the Ravenclaw table.

"That's the girl who left our dorm this morning," James said.

"The one who's talking to the brunette?"

"Yes, that one," the bespectacled boy lazily confirmed. Remus quickly thanked James and made his way over to the Ravenclaw table. All of the Ravenclaws seemed to sense his presence and immediately turned to him, causing Remus' face to flush red.

One of the prettier girls stood and made her way over to Remus, causing him to exhale slightly. She was blonde, but that was the only similarity that she had with Caroline. Her eyes were green and her lips had bright red lipstick on them, which made Remus question how he could've possibly mistaken her from Caroline.

"When I left your dorm this morning without saying goodbye, it meant don't come look for me," the blonde stated.

"I need to talk to you," Remus huffed.
