first idea- the reason why fundy is a fox/salmon hybrid, with nothing of a wild boar in the mix is because sally cheated on wilbur with a fox hybrid and voila✨

but despite fundy not being his son, wilbur doesn't mind this and loves(d) him anyways.

second idea; yes, sally was a salmon shifter, but she had left the picture a long time ago.

fundy is an abomination to other's; looking as vulpine as he does, when his mother was a salmon and his father a wild boar. he was supposed to be like one of them, not a fo x.

sally had loved him, probably more than wilbur did tbh - but she broke under the constant pressure of other people berating her for loving fundy, and she slowly started to distance herself from him.

then one day, wilbur woke up, and sally was g on e

no note, no final goodbye, nothing to tell why sally had left - but wilbur knew it was because she didn't want to raise fundy, he saw how she stopped treating him as her son, as a fucking person

but fundy still loved her very much, and knowing the truth would shatter him.

so wilbur lied, sewed a plush salmon to carry around in a bucket, and told fundy sally just got herself stuck in her fish form, made silly tales of him and sally,

because he couldn't tell fundy his mother was a woman who stopped loving him because everyone else didn't.
