This is a song fic based on the song "What once was" by Her's. I've never done anything like this so hopefully it isn't too bad :) Note; I missed out two verses because they repeat themselves and no one wants to sit through and read that,, this story is quite long - you have been warned, enjoy :)
I guess I knew this would happen to you, Inside I did what I refuse to know the truth.
She was gone. Trapped forever in a parallel world.
Solemnly, he walked towards the wall where the breach had been, where she had almost been sucked into the void. Right now he didn't know what would be worse, it actually happening or what had happened - Pete saving her. He quickly found he would rather Rose actually live a life, than spend an eternity floating through the nothingness of the void.
The room was silent, letting his emotions be as loud as they were felt. The world was saved, but at the cost of the one woman he loved most in the whole universe. This girl made him feel everything, the happiness and determination she brought to the fear rooted deep inside of her, and now all he felt was numb. Nothing mattered to him, not if she wasn't here.
His hand met the wall, the cold matching up to his insides. As he pressed his cheek against the wall, he could almost imagine, almost feel her on the other side, mirroring his actions as well as his feelings. Trapped forever in a parallel world.
I'm heading back inside sitting alone with you, I think I know what's wrong.
Usually, Rose would've been right at his side, taking his hand in hers. She would be there to support him, and he would do the same for her. They would've sorted out the damage at Torchwood before leaving for another adventure in the TARDIS.
Not this time.
This time he was alone. U.N.I.T had been called by one of the few remaining Torchwood members and they were now cleaning up the building, taking the tech they had for themselves - for better uses.
Torchwood. The mere mention of it lighted a fire within him. If they hadn't been playing around with the void and the "ghosts" then he and Rose would have never come, if they didn't go then they wouldn't have to pull the daleks and cyber men into the void, if they didn't go to Torchwood, Rose wouldn't have been lost.
When U.N.I.T found him, he only gave grunts and noncommittal responses to their never ending questions. However at some point, it dawned on him that the quicker he told them what had happened, the quicker he could leave. The tower was cleared and officially closed down, the Doctor wasted no time waiting around for goodbyes or any further chats.
Back in the TARDIS, he tried to ignore how eerie it felt without her voice filling the room. The TARDIS gave him a sad hum, she had grown to love Rose and now she too was missing her Wolf. The Doctor sent them into the vortex, not wanting to stay in a city that reminded him so very much of her.
My friends put on their bravest face, The tails between their legs is only out of place.
It had been a week, relatively, since what he referred to as "Doomsday". Nothing was better. In truth, he had hoped and maybe even expected it to be easier because after all she was only human and another companion. He had had many before her, she was the latest in a long line like she had said.
Except she wasn't. She wasn't "only human" and "another companion" because Rose was special. More special than any other companion he'd ever had and she certainly wasn't just the latest in a long line like she had thought.
Rose had saved him in ways no one else had, in ways no one else could. And she had made him feel things he had never felt before, not even when he was married back on Gallifrey. She showed him that there were other ways to live your life and especially after the Time War, he needed it.
