Chapter 30: Fulfillment

Adan

Kaine just sent me a text:

         46 Shore Street

       STOKEFORD

I barely recognized it and I definitely didn’t trust him. But still I found myself on the doorsteps of a white mansion, hoping to find Evelyn in there. The past two months had been a wild goose chase trying to find her. I hoped that she was inside.

Although now I didn’t.

I could sense a fight between Jason and Kaine. Hollie might’ve been part of it but now that she was dead… I removed the wry thought from my mind. There were more important things to worry about. Evelyn could be in that house and killed in the blink of an eye.

I entered the house. It had a chalky smell. There was a large gaping hole in the ceiling and pebbles broke off from it.

I leapt through the hole and what I saw surprised me.

Evelyn crouched over Jason, her eyes burning a glowing red—just like his. For a moment I thought that she stood a chance against him, but in less than a split second he threw her over and pinned her into the ground with his weight. A cracking noise sounded as her body dug into the granite bricks. He lengthened his claws.

At first I couldn’t believe what I saw, but there was no mistaking the bloodthirsty look in Jason’s fiery eyes—he wanted to kill Evelyn.

I tore through the air and threw myself against his body, pushing him away from her. The sound of rock breaking rang through the air as Jason smashed through successive white walls. I looked through the holes and saw that they led to a green poppy meadow.

The walls began to quiver. The building was about to collapse. I glanced at the fear-stricken Evelyn that lay below me before picking her up, my heart aching for all that Jason must have put her through.

“You’re safe with me now,” I whispered, but I couldn’t guarantee that—I had never seen Jason like this. Not in the last thousand years. He wasn’t… normal anymore. The true form of demons was simply a human figure with dark eyes and pulsing veins around them. Not the blackened state he was in. Jason had turned into something different and dangerous.

I raced through the falling building. As my feet touched the grassy ground of the meadow, the bricks crumbled behind me, falling into a mass of rubble, only with half of the walls standing.

Jason sneered at me. “That building was a relic.” His tone sounded cynical. I doubted he cared much for the mansion.

I carefully placed Evelyn on the ground. “Don’t do anything. If Jason comes for you, run.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

I faced Jason. Kaine stood a few feet in front of me, ready for the battle. Why was he helping? He had no gain from this.

The poppy meadow was beautiful. Although that wasn’t the main focus now.

The flowers that bloomed close to Jason wilted into shrivelled gray stalks. The evil energy that Jason had accumulated was frightening.

He stood up mechanically. “Give Jane back to me.”

“She chose me,” I said, “it’s not a matter of giving. She’s not property.”

“SHE’S MINE!” He leapt toward me, the demonic force pulsing behind him. I had never felt anything as strong as this. My confidence wavered. How was I to defeat him?
