It was a few hours until her birthday, her 18th birthday. She wasn't sure whether to be excited or to be scared. Not to mention all of her family members suddenly acting weird.
She had just got back from pre-birthday shopping with Ningning and she was organising all the stuff she had bought into drawers when her brother came in.
"Yangyang, would you please fucking knock?" He knocked on the bedside table that he was standing next to before continuing. "So you know how it's like one hour and sixteen minutes until your birthday. There's something I should tell you. Basically, the country's introduced this thing when on your eighteenth birthday you suddenly gain some kind of superpower, something like that anyway. And yeah, just thought you should know."
Meihua blinked at him a few times, her lips pressed in a straight line. "Mhm, very funny. Now leave, I'll come downstairs in 30 minutes." Yangyang only shrugged, "Alright, Mei, but don't say I didn't tell you."
It was 11:30pm Thirty minutes until her birthday, and her parents had forced her to come downstairs so that she could watch old videos of herself. Ugh, sentiment.
It was 11:40pm Twenty minutes until her birthday, she was in the kitchen with the rest of her family, eating some celebratory food that her dad had cooked.
It was 11:50pm Ten minutes until her birthday. Everything was deadly silent until her mum spoke out, "Mei, I don't know if you've been told but the country has introduced a new system, in which all people receive a power when they turn eighteen. It's to further the development of the nation apparently but I don't know how much I believe in it."
Meihua stared at her mother with a deathly look in her eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you before." "You should be. I don't have enough time to film a before and after video now." Her lips formed a pout. "I literally told you-" "Wait, mum, what's your power then?" Meihua interrupted her brother.
"I don't have one." Her mother responded truthfully. "Dad, what's yours?" He shook his head, "I don't have one either." "Yang?" "Meihua, listen, everyone gets their power at eighteen. This whole thing was introduced a year ago, a month after you left, those who were already eighteen or over at the time can't get one."
Meihua's eyes widened at the news. She giggled a little, "Wait so I'm gonna have powers and the rest of you aren't? That means you can't even stop me. Hahaha, sucks to suck motherfu-" "No swearing please." Her dad said, putting a hand up to motion her to stop. "You're just jealous." She rolled her eyes.
"Ohohohoh, 15 seconds you guysss~"

"Whoop whoop!!!" Her family began singing happy birthday to her but she stopped them. "Wait wait wait, we have to find out my powers. Nothing's happening yet, do I need to charge them or something?"
"We can go and find out tomorrow. There's an archive around here somewhere, it should say."
They continued singing happy birthday to her and gave her gifts to her. She was thankful but still restless, impatient to find out what her power was. But she would have to wait until morning for the big news.
