About a week ago, Sophie and I set up a system.
On the first night and every Friday and Tuesday night, she'll transmit to me around 11 p.m., to make sure everything's going smoothly.
It's a smart plan, but I'm not sure about my brain turning to Sophie's free real estate.
At 11:17 p.m, she transmits to me. Hey, her voice says.
You're late. And then I realize she's in my head, so she heard that. She's hearing this, too, then.
Yeah, I know, I'm sorry, we... yeah. I'm sorry, she says. She does sound very sorry.
There's a pause. Can you hear everything I'm thinking? I finally ask.
Um—no, no I can't. Just the stuff you direct towards me. Not the background thoughts. If that makes sense.
Oh, okay. That's... good. Is everything alright for you guys, then?
Yep, she replies. Everything's good. We... yeah, we're... we're good, everything's really calm, since we're just making sure you and Rosaleen's okay.
Oh. That's... good. What am I supposed to say?
Mm-hmm.
Another awkward silence, and then she asks, Did anything... you know, did anything bad happen?
Well... I try to find something bad that happened, but I genuinely can't find anything. This is going much better than expected, actually. No, not really. Me and Rosaleen were recruited pretty smoothly—and Tam's fine, too.
Oh, that's—that's actually really, really good. How'd they do it, by the way? The, um, the recruiting, I mean.
Alvar and Ruy just brought us to Gisela and Vespera, and Rosaleen kinda convinced them. And... um... they also... well, they kind of told us a story?
Gisela and Vespera?
No, no. Ruy. And Alvar interrupted every now and then.
Oh. Was it about... She stops. I'm guessing she was going to make a joke, before she realized that the joke was going to be pretty freaking dark. What was it about?
Oh, you know. Your typical Diabolical Rebellion Origins.
She laughs. I didn't know transmitted laughter was a thing, but... it's pretty cool. Yeah? Like the Joker's tragic, tragic backstory, by any chance?
I have no idea who the Joker is, but I reply, Tragic-er. The smile then slips from my face, because it is tragic. Sixteen deaths.
Sixteen deat—wow. That's—That's a lot, Dex.
I know. It's really—It... makes sense, too? I don't know. I don't like this, though.
You don't like... the mission? She sounds very confused. And also kind of guilty. But that's not what I meant, anyway.
No, I don't like how they're all... normal.
They're all... What?
I scoff. It's a bitter sound. I'm not even sure why; I should've known this would've gotten complicated. Do you want to see my dinner memories? Or the story? Or even just, Melia?
There's another silence. I guess it makes sense; I sounded a bit crazy just then.
Dex—
No, sorry. Here, um... you can look at my memories now. Just the Neverseen stuff, though. Everything else isn't that important.
