Ruy is hurt.
But he doesn't break his promise.
He gives me a crystal to go back alone, and he leaves.
But he doesn't break his promise.
I don't feel like talking (to you), he says, and he says he won't tell Gisela (yet).
But I don't think he's gonna break his promise.
Wow. My life lies on the word of a murderer.
I am such an idiot.
I lift the crystal to the light, and I hold myself together until I'm standing in the Sunroom, where no one is here. I know I should tell Rosaleen, but I'm afraid.
So my legs lead me to Tam's room instead. I knock on the door.
He opens it.
He looks me over and he knows something's wrong. He lets me in and asks, "What happened?"
I walk in on shaky legs. I look at the cat statue on his table with green eyes, and I run to his bathroom and I throw up.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"You told him." Tam's staring at me like I'm dumb, like I don't already know that.
"I did," I say. I feel like I should be crying, but my eyes are dry. "I'm sorry."
"No, don't apologize to me." He sighs, and stands from the bed to pace. He stops, looks at me again. "What if he tells Gisela?"
I shake my head. "He won't."
"He might."
"I don't think so."
Tam clicks his tongue in frustration, and sits back down. "Are you okay?"
"Not really."
"That's okay." Tam sighs again. "Did you tell Rosaleen?"
"I... no."
"No?"
"No."
"Hell, Dex," he says, his voice exasperated but sympathetic. "You have to tell her."
"But I messed up, and this includes her, and her sister's here, and what if she cries? Because of me?"
Tam looks at me like, you know you have to tell her.
I look away, because I know that. "I don't know," I say finally. "I'm just scared. I messed up."
He doesn't say anything at first, because we both know I did mess up, and he's not one for sugarcoating. Tam sighs for the third time. "You'd better hope Ruy cares about you."
"He does," I insist, and I think it's rather pretentious how I didn't even hesitate.
"I know you think he does." Tam leans back. "I hope you're right."
I don't insist that I am, because a part of me is wavering, because maybe he doesn't care as much as I thought.
Tam studies me, then shakes his head and pats his bed. "Join me," he says. "Let's talk about something else."
I hesitate, then stand from the red armchair and sit next to him. "I just don't know—"
He interrupts, "We both know how crap this situation is. So let's talk about something else, because ruminating isn't gonna do anything."
I give in, and I nod.
He smiles slightly, and it's stressed, but my brain is used to it, so it hardly registers. "I don't know how you trust him so much, but let's hope it pays off."
It's a feeling, but feelings can lie, I think, but I don't tell him this, I only nod.
And we talk about things that won't ever matter, not in this life.
