If Zayn had the habit of smoking, he would have finished a packet by now. But he didn't. So he's just sitting on the old bench at the bridge, staring at the dark water, trying to calm himself down.
Once his initial anger simmered down, Zayn realized, he wasn't angry. He was hurt. Once again. Once again, Liam told something that should have been between them, to Charlie. And this one.. This one was still sensitive and Liam should know that. He shouldn't just throw it around like it's no big deal. It is a big deal for Zayn. And he doesn't know how long he's going to stay bitter about what happened years ago!
Someone sat next to Zayn, and for a moment his mind decided to give him flashes of scenes from I Know What You Did Last Summer. He slowly turned to look at the person who was already looking at him. Liam.
"What are you doing here?"
Zayn asked in a dry voice. He was done with Liam. He can't have a fight here at the bridge. It's peaceful and he doesn't need any chaos.
"We need to talk."
"We really don't."
Zayn said getting up. He needs to stay away from Liam. If he is going to bring up what happened years ago, he might embarrass himself and cry. And he's not going to do that.
"Zayn, please!"
Liam began following him.
"We need to-"
"We don't Liam. Go to Charlie. Or whoever you prefer. You just proved once again that I couldn't have trusted you. Thanks for that."
"This is what we need to talk about! Come on Zayn! What are you saying!? We both know I admitted to smoking too. I didn't rat you out!"
Now Zayn was getting angry. Couldn't Liam leave it at that?
"But you did Liam! You did. You went to my house when I wasn't there and you ratted me out! I reached home to everyone already planning on questioning me and I didn't even get a heads up. When it comes from your best friend, I call that backstabbing. I don't know what you call it."
"Zee.."
"Liam please!"
Zayn can't take Liam calling him by that name. It was Liam who started with that name. And then they grew up and Liam never called him that again. And he was glad.
"Zayn, you need to understand. I did not go to your house to just expose you or something. I went in looking for you. You hadn't reached back. I was about to go into your room when I saw your Baba yelling at Badi Ammi because she tried to hide the cigarettes from him. He knew by the smell that we smoked. And he was mad. I couldn't watch Badi Ammi crying, so I admitted that I smoked. And they knew it was with you. Because we always.. I didn't go and get you in trouble. You know I would never do that!"
Yeah. That made sense. Couldn't Liam have told him that at that time?
"If it was like that, why didn't you tell me? Why did you just leave me there like you just came to betray me? And why didn't you come to school that day? Did you actually want to hang out with your Aunt or did you make that up? I don't trust you Liam, I'm sorry!"
Zayn shook his head walking again. This piece of information, the information that Liam didn't actually go and rat him out, wasn't sitting well with him.
"If you weren't guilty, then why didn't you come to me? Why did you stop being friends with me?"
Zayn needed answers. Twelve years were too much. It's enough now.
"You stopped being friends with me too!"
Liam muttered back. He didn't want to continue this conversation. He knew where it was leading and he did not want it to go there.
