"Miss Lilitah, your identity papers are ready." The book maker handed me our empire issue ID papers. On a hunch I looked down at the bottom, then pointedly at the book maker. I pointed to the symbol of the Thalmor Embassy.

"Empire issue, huh?" He shrugged. "You know them. Do everything behind the Emperor's pen. And deny any involvement with anything but shutting down Talos worship. But of course, officially, I didn't say any of that just now." I nodded. Damn altmer. And the empire was stupid for not fighting back, but I could see why they didn't.

***********

"...so that's basically it. I know none of us worship Talos, but we can't antagonize these guys either. They all have sticks up their asses, all the way up to the head of the Embassy. " Arina stiffened a bit. I glanced apologetically at her. "I know you don't, but you don't know their history, so it's easy for you to act human."

We were coming up to the border. The border captain stopped using asked for our papers. He smiled.

"Always nice to get adventurers here. No one comes this way hardly and it gets a bit lonely with just the boys. Go on in, Lady Dragonborn and company. The Synod is expecting you."

I froze mid step and turned around slowly. "I'm sorry, what did you say? The Synod is expecting us?" He nodded. "The Synod shouldn't even know we're coming."

His face fell. "But that Thalmor agent said-"

A sickening realization fell over me. It's fine. It has to be. They can't possibly know that we're from an alternate world, right? No, that can't be it. The concept of reincarnation is foreign here. The only other explanation is that we've had a spy following us. We've not done anything suspicious, thank the gods.

"Damn the Thalmor. I knew I shouldn't have dismissed the feeling I had about the hideout being watched. And now we're going right into the heart of the Thalmor conspiracy. "

Gods help us.
