My name is Skye Winters.
Thunk.
The Clan calls me Silentshadow.
Thunk.
I gave up my ordinary life for this action-filled, dangerous game of chasing Scarletstar.
Thunk.
Oh, and I recently discovered my knife-throwing talent.
I've been throwing knives for at least three hours straight by now, and I can feel my clanmates' stares burning a hole in my back. But they know better than to interrupt my "therapy". According to the clan's doctors, eighty percent of the people who join us have a mental problem caused by a bad past that drove them to come. They think I'm in that eighty percent.
I'm not here because of a bad experience. I came here before it happened, but even if that's why I'm in therapy, I don't understand the need to go. It doesn't even bother me now. Not the memories of the stares, the rumors, the fear in my classmates' eyes when they saw what I did...
"Silentshadow," Dustfire, my brother, says. "You've been in dreamland for ten minutes."
Okay maybe it does still bother me. It's not like I zone out constantly, though.
"That's the tenth time this week."
I lie. A lot. Mostly to myself, but it never works.
"I'm fine," I say. "Just thinking about this weekend." My fifteenth birthday.
"If you say so..." He lets the sentence drop off slowly, as if he's expecting me to say more. I don't. I turn and run as fast as I can to my room.
As I run through the long, twisting hallways, I have time to think about it...
-----------------
The door swung open and slammed into the wall. An insane giggle reached our ears.
"Hello," she said with a singsong voice. "I know you're all in here. Why don't you just give up and join me? Save yourselves the trouble!"
She stepped into the classroom in a black cloak, with her hood up, so we could see nothing but her softly glowing red eyes. My classmates let out a few quiet shrieks and gasps of fear. But I wasn't scared. I knew who this mad girl was.
"Scarletstar, I wouldn't lay a finger on them if I were you," I said, standing up. Please don't fear me for this, I silently say to my friends. Please remember me.
She raised her eyebrows only a bit, but I knew she was more surprised than she let on.
"I didn't expect to meet you here," she said, barely louder than a whisper. "Nice to see a friendly face."
I heard the sound of a knife being taken out from the folds of her cloak, so I immediately pulled out mine. We just circled each other for about twenty seconds.
Then she threw it.
I brought my arm up just in time to block the knife with the armor I wore hidden under my clothes. This time I heard her gasp. She searched her cloak and I realized she had been too confident before she came here. She'd only brought one knife.
So I threw mine, and it stuck in her chest. She was already losing a lot of blood, so I was sure it would kill her.
"How..." she whispered, looking at the knife.
"I'm a warrior in SoulsClan," I answered simply.
But then she looked up and smirked, and I swear she began to slightly glow.
"Clan leader," she said with a giggle. That's when I remembered that clan leaders like her have ten lives.
There was a flash of golden light, and she vanished.Me again! Yeah, so these chapters will probably be pretty short until I get the hang of things. Just thought I'd let y'all know.
