Sorry if this isn't a particularly good chapter. It was definitely the most challenging one to write so far.
It takes us ten minutes to reach the nearest exit. It's the same one I went through when I ran away six months ago.
The busses are lined up next to the school when we get above ground, waiting for the bell to ring before releasing the students, I assume. I know I'm allowed in before the bell rings, though, so I'll just pretend we were dropped off by our parents. I'm opening the door when I realize something.
"Wait. Aren't they going to notice that we don't go to this school?" I ask.
"No," Blueflight says. She takes out two pieces of paper and hands them to me and Dawnflame. "SoulsClan made an agreement with this school. We help them out by protecting students, and they give us supplies like food, along with reports of students who are skilled enough to join us. These are the class schedules they sent us. I made sure we had our lunch period together."
My schedule looks more boring than I remember. After months of battle training, war strategy classes, and actual combat, seeing math and history on this paper seems ridiculous. At least I have band.
Inside the school, we only wait two minutes before the bell rings. I get to my homeroom and sit down before anyone else because of the speed I picked up in warrior training.
The first student walks in, and I brace myself. It's show time. I have to keep my eye out for Scarletstar.
"Hi there!" A peppy voice says from the desk behind me. I turn around slowly. Her voice sounds so familiar. I see a girl with short brown hair and blue-green eyes...
Uh oh. It's Delia.
"Skye, can I talk to you?" Delia asks.
No one has spoken to me since it happened earlier today. This is a big turn of events.
"Sure," I say.
She puts a hand on my shoulder. "I just wanted to let you know that I understand why you did what you did. You were protecting us. Thanks for that. We'll figure out what to do to fix-"
Delia gets cut off by a throng of students pulling her away from me, screaming about how dangerous I am. She tries to talk to me five more times later on, but nobody lets her come near me."Um... Hello," I say. I guess she doesn't recognize me.
"I'm Delia. Who are you?" She says with a smile.
I can't help but smile myself. "I'm S..." I can't tell her my real name. She'd surely remember me. "Sierra." Nice save.
"Nice name. Better than Delia," she scoffs.
I remember back before I left that I called her Dels.
"What if I called you Dels?" I ask, knowing she'll like it.
"Yeah!" She says, then leans towards me. "Are you psychic at all? A lot of my friends call me that."
I shake my head. "Nope. I just thought it sounded fun. I'm good at coming up with names on the spot." Obviously. Where else could I have gotten Sierra?
"Cool," she says, thoroughly fascinated like the friendly girl she is. "Say, you should sit with me and some friends of mine at lunch."
"What class do you have lunch in?" I ask, pulling out my schedule.
She giggles. "Oh don't bother with that. This year they're letting us sit wherever we want at lunch."
That makes it easier to look for Scarletstar. I could walk around the cafeteria quickly and maybe get a glimpse of her.
"Okay, I'll sit with you," I say. "Is it okay if a couple friends of mine come too?"
She nods quickly. Delia was always happy to meet new people.
The bell rings and I head to my first class, advanced science. Huh. Shouldn't be so bad. I was always a fan of science.
-Later-
"And that, class," my teacher says, "is why we don't mess with the faucets!"
Someone did the rubber band on the faucet trick and it went horribly wrong. The faucet somehow broke and water went all over the room. Now thanks to whoever did it, we all have to clean it up since he didn't own up to it.
"This sucks, doesn't it?"
I spin around and see Alex.
"Why did you do that?" Alex asks me in shock.
"I was just trying to protect you all," I say.
Her eyes are wide with horror and they're looking at me. At least she's talking to me...
"But you killed her!" She exclaims. "You wouldn't do that! You couldn't!"
"I didn't want her to hurt you..." I say at almost a whisper.
"But now someone's dead. You could have reasoned with her."
"No one can reason with Scarletstar!"
But Alex wasn't listening to me. She stopped talking, and now was running away."Yeah," I say. I don't know how else to answer.
She starts pulling her red hair back and making a braid. "You must be new. I'm Alexandra, but my friends call me Alex. How 'bout you?"
"Sierra," I reply.
"Nice name," she says. "You're new here aren't you?"
I nod.
"Well you're in luck. Here, make some friends." She takes me to a group of people at another table.
Some of them are there.
"This is Derek," she points at a boy with shaggy blonde hair and green eyes. I already know him.
"Hi," he says. I wave back.
"Derek, wait, there are reasons I did this!" I shout to him. But he just backs away.
"Please," I say.
He runs away as fast as he can."And this," Alex turns me towards another boy with brown hair, and green eyes. "Is Nick."
"I told you not to call me that," he mutters. "Its Nicholas."
He sees me and stares suspiciously for a moment.
He looks at me with a confused expression. I just know he's going to run the way Alex and Derek did.
But he doesn't. He just talks to me, like Delia did.
"I don't know what the hell just happened, but it didn't look like something you'd do," Nicholas says. "You did seem to be protecting us though..."
"So you aren't scared of me," I say hopefully. "Right?"
He sighs. "I don't know what to think. I'll get back to you on it."I have a bad feeling he recognizes me. I hope he doesn't tell anyone if he does.
"So you're... new," he says.
"Yep," I confirm. This isn't good.
Then the bell rings and I rush to my next class before he can say anything else.
Thanks to jacoblohman for helping me get ideas for Nicholas's response to Skye's actions! :)
