(A/N) *kneels before readers* I APOLOGIZE FOR TAKING ALL OF ETERNITY TO UPDATE. Writer's block, laziness, and forgetfulness really got me this time. And maybe a large supply of fanfictions.
This chapter was supposed to be pretty easy, but I guess this has been poor planning on my part. I have to combine two chapters to reach my 2,000 word goal here, and hopefully the next one doesn't give me a struggle as well. But that's enough chatter. It's time for you people to read!I can barely see the student while we chase him; he's had so much of a head start and he tries to run through the most crowded spots in the school. We're probably going to lose him.
Outside, I spot him getting into a car. As he does, he looks at me.
Damn, it's Jonathan. Of all people, it had to be him. There's no way he'll stay quiet about this. With his big mouth, the entire school will know who I am in a matter of days.
I sprint after the car and get so far as the street, even though I know it's a futile attempt. The car's gone, Jonathan's gone, the camera's gone, the video's gone, all of it gone, and any chance of staying hidden has vanished, too. I walk back into the school in defeat. Suddenly the crowd feels to dense, and I need to get out and go home.
____________________The next morning I go through my regular routine before school. I don't know what I'll say to people when they ask.
Mondays just got a whole lot worse.
I pick up my bookbag at the door of our room. I decided to stay at the clan base rather than my house so I can keep my parents out of this as much as possible. I have to try to be very quiet here in the morning, though, to not wake Dustfire. He decided to sleep in because of his lack of training sessions.
A little ways down the hall, I notice the herd, minus Sparrowheart, waiting for me on the steps at the entrance. It appears Lisa already told the others, as they all look at me sadly.
"Skye," my little sister says softly. "What are you going to do?"
I must look nervous for her to mention anything, so I put on a more confident expression. At least, I hope that's how it looks.
"I have to face the music."
____________________It's so hard to take the mixture of glares and looks of fear I receive when I walk into the school. In fact, I almost turn around and leave, but Nicholas stops me.
I make a face that I would expect belongs on a deer caught in headlights. He doesn't sway.
"You know," he says. "Last time you were alone, I get that. But this time we're here for you. Ignore the rest of them, 'cause you have us."
I nod slowly and keep moving forward. Delia pulls me into homeroom with a smile.
She might be optimistic about the whole situation, but the feeling is definitely not mutual. I find my seat quickly and look down at my desk, able to feel the other students' stares burning holes in me.
"I can't believe we didn't notice earlier," one girl says from a few seats away. "How did we not realize that the killer came back?"
I clench my fists and shut my eyes, holding back tears. No one tried to understand while I was gone. No one got over it. Why am I still here? I want to leave, but I can't.
"Skye!" Delia calls from the couches in the corner, reverting to my real name. "Come over here!"
I cautiously rise from my seat and make my way to Delia. I sit down on the couch and look at her questioningly.
"I thought you should get away from all those people," she says. "Don't worry too much, though. Our homeroom was the worst about the incident after you left. Others are a bit more polite."
