Thunk.
I run to the target fifteen feet away, yank out the knife I just threw, and run back.
"See?" I say. "Just like that."
We decided to give Nicholas a shot. He might be more capable of this than we think, but so far whatever capabilities he may have aren't showing. Now here we are, in the school gym at seven o'clock at night, watching Nicholas throw knives. It's more like he's chucking them and getting frustrated when he misses.
Thud. The knife's handle slams against the target and ricochets off of it, rather than the blade making contact and sticking.
Dawnflame seems to find this whole situation hilarious. She's stifling giggles when she says, "At least you hit the target this time."
Which is true, since there are eight knives stuck in the padding I had the sense to put on the wall behind the target.
Blueflight is much more pessimistic than she had been earlier. "Yeah, but a knife handle isn't going to take care of Scarletstar."
I wonder what will happen if we ever do get rid of her? What would we do next? SoulClan's main focus for the last four years has been Scarletstar. There hasn't been much trouble around here besides her to protect people from.Still giggling, Dawnflame squeals, "Maybe he can provide the distraction!"
Nicholas looked like a volcano about to explode. His face was redder than I'd ever seen it. It was kind of funny, until he threw the knife in his hand.
He hit the target dead center.
This made Blueflight sit up with her eyes practically popping out of her head. "Damn."
Blueflight is the second best knife-thrower in the clan. If she's impressed, it means something. And she sure is impressed.
"So," I say. "Now we know what makes you tick."
"Yup! Where the hell did that come from?" Dawnflight says, her giggles brought to an abrupt halt. "So he's not the distraction anymore?"
"NO!" Nicholas shouts. He's still mad. Hopefully it doesn't last.
We all practice for another half hour, Nicholas having greatly improved, then decide to go home. Our backpacks are piled in the corner of the gym.
"I don't remember you putting yours there," Dawnflame says to Nicholas. She points to his backpack, which is five feet away from the pile, and near the door to the gym.
He shrugs and goes to get it. I look at the backpack for a moment. Something is off about it, like someone left it in a rush to get out of the room.
Nicholas suddenly drops it and stares at it like it just bit him. Backing away, he says, "Skye..."
I see a blue sticky note on the front of the bag and I come closer to read it. In crimson ink, it says:
I know you're searching for me... But you might want to search harder. I'm closer than you think, and I'm coming for HIM first!
-Scarletstar(A/N) Sorry for the short chapter! I tried finding ways to extend it like, all week, but I've got nothing. Mad writer's block going on in here *knocks on hollow head*
