Joel POV

Ellie hasn't woken up from surgery yet.

It's been weeks and the doctors say she's in a coma, which may be the best thing for her now so she can recover safely, but it is worrisome. Tommy tells me I need to rest more but all I can do is sit by Ellie, hold her hand, and just wait for her to wake up.

Her baby is healthy and alive. Maria and the doctors watch over her most of the time, but Tommy will bring her in to visit Ellie and I'll hold her while I sit with Ellie. We haven't given her a name because we all felt like Ellie should be the one to do that. Even if she wakes up and decides to give up her baby, we still want her to have the option.

Maria and Tommy went through our bags once we all settled down. I didn't have it in me to distract myself, I had to be by Ellie's side every minute in case she woke up. Maria found all of Ellie's Nasa shirts that we got from the gas station and she made sure to keep them in the hospital room in one of the dressers so when Ellie does wake up, she can wear those if she'd like. Tommy also found the stuffed rocket that I had taken from the gas station. I told him it was gonna be a present to Ellie or her baby, but I hadn't decided yet. He just slipped it back in my bag and put my bag with our other stuff in the hospital room.

Tommy and Maria insisted that I go back home and rest, especially after I passed out, but I couldn't leave Ellie. Tommy said he's been cleaning and taking care of the house while we've been gone. Maria piped in saying she was taking care of the flowers that Ellie had planted in front of the house and was sad to see them die when winter rolled around.

Yesterday, Maria excitedly came into Ellie's room with a vase full of those flowers and told us that Ellie's flowers had rebloomed for spring and she brought some over for us to enjoy. I don't remember specifically what most were called but she did bring some orange tulips. Ellie loves the orange tulips and always cut those for me once they were ready. I took one out of the vase and tried to smell it but it didn't really have a smell. I chuckled and I knew Ellie would've been laughing with me.

I miss her.

A knock on the door disrupts my thoughts, I look up and see Tommy standing in the doorway.

"Hey," I mutter out. I know they're worried about me and Ellie but sometimes it's just too much when they're checking in multiple times a day.

"You need a break? I can sit with her while you get some food in you-"

"I'm fine, Tommy," I say, sitting back in my chair. I put my hands on my face and try to rub the exhaustion off.

"No, you're not," Tommy says, walking into the room. "You haven't eaten in days and if you do, it's only bits of bread or a sip of water. You haven't gained much weight since we found you and Maria is worried that-"

"That I'm gonna die?" I cut in.

"Joel-"

"I'll be okay once Ellie wakes up," I say, looking back to her.

They placed a feeding tube in her when she went into the coma so she's been slowly gaining some of her weight back. From looking at her, you'd never know she just had a baby but you could tell something traumatic went down. She doesn't look like herself but she looks better than she was.

"Joel, please. Just get some food, walk around a bit, visit Maria and the baby, and I'll sit with Ellie. I'll keep her company and if she shows any signs of waking up, I'll call for you immediately," Tommy says to me.

"Tommy-"

"Please, Joel. I'm not going to ask you again," He says to me. I sigh and slowly stand up. I kiss Ellie on the forehead before making my way out of the room.
